Hey all,

After having done the savage lands of Oraven (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/23922-oraven-savage-lands-fantasy-map.htmlhttp://), I've decided on another region of Oraven, the Red Moors.

The Red Moors made its name, not from the color of the moors but from the sea color that surrounding the area. I didn't find the real explanation about this strange color : according to some inhabitants beliefs, the sea is made of some old gods blood after a great ancien war while the priests of Monshra tells that the red is actually due to the reflection of Ehrun, the red moon. Some fools even theorize that the sea would get its strange color from some redish luminescent algae in its depths.

It was done in Photoshop and the full size map is 14"x19". WIP thread is here (http://www.cartographersguild.com/regional-world-mapping/23997-wip-oraven-red-moors.html). Thanks to everyone for the support.

Comments are still welcome, I hope you'll like it.

Feel free to rep, rate or run away :)

Looking forward to more maps from the Lands of Oraven... ;)

Thanks guys, comments appreciated :)
@ Miranda : You really want me to give all my secrets? :D

the forest are some patterns of my own on which I apllied a combination of overpainting and filters then I turned them into new patterns. Once some several blocks patterns are cloned on the map I make some slight dark area on a new layer under the forest one. then I apply 2 highlights made with a custom brush (same color but pressure, opacity and size of the brush different on the 2 highlights).
@ Eilathen : Get some warm clothes ready, it's gonna be cold on the next region of Oraven ;)

Your maps are one of the reasons i dont get bored on looking at maps tha last half year. Its a huge jump from your first maps, which had lots of references to other mappers or historical styles, to this now very well tuned and fluid personal style. I am amazed and cant wait to see more maps by your hand.

Amazing work Max! :) I love the backstory and how you fade the water from the south west to the bottom of the bay like that! (Bottom being the north in this case)

Amazing Max! If you don't mind my asking, how do you get your base background? Specifically the one used on Selvarin, but this would work too. I'm looking to get into Fantasy Cartography, but can't even get past the base texture part. :P

Thanks TalonIII. I use to use some combination of several textures layers. I'm not sure that will help you but on this one, the land base background is made of 7 layers : 1 colored landmass layer, 3 textures layers set to color burn (20, 60 and 20%), 1 texture layer (actually the first of the 3 previous ones) set to overlay 80%, a light adjustment layer on hue/saturation and another texture layer set to color burn 20% (some of those textures are homemade, others are from the web). For the sea, i used a colored base layer and 4 other layers : a texture one (the first one use on the land) set at linear burn 60%, a texture one (the second one I used on the land) set at color burn 40%, a texture one set to color 30% that I partially erased with some grunge brushes ( the less redish part on the south of the map) and modified with an adjustment layer on hue/saturation :)

This, THIS is why I love this site. Everyone, helps raise everyone else's "game" with helpful tips, suggestions, inspiration, etc.

I get a little OCD about interesting numbers some times, not only did I put you at 1001, but as soon as I post this reply, you & I will have exactly 1439 posts each. ( I do admit you did it in half the time I did )

Lovely as per usual Max. I think you are giving Sapiento a run for his money for his (unofficial) title of being the most prolific artists at the Guild.

Cheers,

Thank you Arsheesh, glad you like it! If the amount of maps is not at the expense of quality, that sounds a good title :D

Your maps are absolutely amazing!
How long have you been making them for?

- Max -

Thank you mkerr:) I did my first map (Sevindel's town (http://www.cartographersguild.com/finished-maps/21600-sevindel-hand-drawn-town.html)) just before entering the Guild in December 2012 so I would say 8/9 months.

My word! You've only been working on maps for 8-9 months? If I'm half as good as you in a year I shall be quite proud indeed...
This is such a unique map!

Agreed, your mountains look amazing in all the Oraven maps. Are they a brush or are they hand-drawn?

- Max -

thanks guys! Those are hand-drawn turned into brushes then overpainted. Then is the color work.
