I have a dream of eventually designing a city based on some key design principles laid out in carfree cities, an urban pathfinder utopia attempt.

so here is a place for resources for that idea and others are welcome to raid these resources as I explore and experiment.

so to start with here is a link http://www.carfree.com

I will try to add a resource once a week.

once a week an example city map

Here is an existing city- Damascus
Ancient City of Damascus - UNESCO World Heritage Centre (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/20)
Damascus Map (http://www.mapsofworld.com/syria/damascus.html)

the layers of roads influencing the layers above with buildings of so many ages, 5500 years of continuous settlement with evidence of a village even in 9000 BCE great variety in street line variety. Great texture varieties- plantings in urban orchards and parks, dry yards, etc...satellite view is rich. and I wish all its inhabitants peace and safety.
Damascus Map - Interactive Map of Damascus (http://www.sacred-destinations.com/syria/damascus-map) - you will need to zoom in but just look at the patterns of self organizing settlements!

If you don't mind someone else adding a link...

I found someone talking about:

http://phantomcity.org/#

in my newsfeed the other day. It looks like they collected old/unused plans/ideas for different parts of Chicago, SF and NYC. Interesting stuff!

Please add as much as you feel led to. I was hoping this would become a resource for us all to use and contribute to.

A series of maps easily shows the sequence of the process of a city forming,
How can a single map tell the story of how the city formed? older areas with expansion and infill in newer architectural forms etc... as well as a sequence of younger and younger "outer walls of the expanding city.

what sort of people would be the early adopters of urbanization? does this help you build a tension between utopian dreams and human weakness in your city's story? build the peaceable kingdom with lumber from the eye of the viewer of motes (not moats)
