After months of not really visiting this forum I got a sudden urge to draw a map again. And just as luck would have it, I saw a Lite challenge which piqued my interest... And would end very soon.

Great.

So, I got to work and decided to try a one-day map: no precisely drawn out towns and borders but a more painterly impression. Since others were already doing continents, lakes and caves I wanted to do something else: I decided the blob was the outline of the impact field of a tight cluster of astroids.

And so the great Ya'gan astroid impact of 2013 came about. I'm sure the inhabitants are not very grateful.

I will first make a 'before' map, then redraw it after the impact. It's likely that I won't be in time for the challenge, but it's still good practice!

Feedback and critique always very welcome, but keep in mind this is supposed to be a quick map, and not a refined masterpiece :)

And the 'before' is finished for now!

I'm a little scared to start the results of the impact, not really done anything like that before!

Thanks, Diamond! I'm currently considering whether I want to label my cities/regions/rivers... Hmm.

Alright, I challenged myself to finish this before midnight, and it's midnight in my time zone now. This is what I have:

I might still polish it a bit, but the core idea is definitely there!

Okay, well that's the coolest before/after map I've seen ... that I can remember ... ever.

Aw, thanks, that's such a sweet compliment! Every time I look at it I see more things that need to be fixed... But I'll leave that for another day :D

It look really cool ! Even better than Chashio's rat

Thanks! I did consider simply drawing a giant rat attacking a village, hehehe.

I think I just got a wrinkle from laughing too hard.

Nice stuff though it would have been cool to see more WIP of the map itself building up.

So now we know what really happened... A rat with a net full of asteroids.

@ Max: I was hesitant to post more WIPs as I did this over quite a brief period of time and didn't want to spam the forum. Because I had to work quickly a lot of the time there was no 'buildup' to speak of; I went from raw sketch to almost complete mountains in one go, for example. If you'd like I could post a layer-by-layer view? Here's the original sketch I started off with.

Apparently I accidentally left out the roads alltogether in the 'after' image! Not too noticeable, but it needed fixing anyway. Update with roads, reshaped meteorite impacts, clearer underwater terrain upheaval, more debris, brighter lettering, clearer smoke, and some extra islands. Also slightly less contrast!

For easier view of the changes, we have an animated gif. (http://i.imgur.com/T9gvGxP.gif) How fancy.

Nice job, thanks for the first skecth input ;) Also I think a bit of labeling would be cool to finish it :p

Very cool, I like this before & after map

That is GREAT. One of the most unique ideas I've seen here. I do agree with Max though; if you added some labels and/or extra details it would really help fill it out.

Thanks :D

To be honest I'm not great at labels, but I may try! It does look a bit empty still. If anyone has any good examples or tutorials to link me to I'd be very grateful.

On a side note, does anyone know when this contest ends? The 15th, right?

Contest is set to end tonight around 8PM Pacific time, but I can extend it until that time tomorrow if people are needing a smidge more time...
