View Full Version : [WIP] The Southern Domain

I wanted to only start a new thread if I am sure to finish it properly. This map, after 6h work on it looks like I will finish it.
Its basicly the continent south of the continent of the Icathian Empire, shown on my Classic Arden Map. I grow a bit bored to remap it so often, that I decided to have a take on this place in my world.

In the process of creating this map, I got usefull hints from -Max- to change the shape of the continent and the scale of teh Mountains that they fit the continental zoom, instead of looking like a large Regio Map.

Yes, that was important. I must start to rethink a lot of the way i used to map bevore. Its time for some suptle improvements. I am too obsesse with mountains and should start to map more organicly and get better at labeling.

Those mountains are indeed really nice. I'm still thinking that your usual background texture is a bit heavy, especially with the new scaled mountains. They have a very beautiful neat look and that texture is "overfilling" the map a bit much with its grain whe nzoomed in in my opinion.

2nd or 3rd works better imo. You can choose one or the other depending on how much details you will go on the map. If that's a very detailed map, the more subtle texture (i.e the third one) would work I guess.

As for me, it depends. Are you planning to color the lands?
If yes, I would prefer a less stronger texture effect (as in the third one). If not, the second one would go nicely.

I'd say the second one works best - the third is a little too pale IMHO, but if you are adding additional color it could work. If not, definitely the second.

I slowly become less stubborn, ok 2nd Version won. I will add a slight aquarell tint to the Mountains but mostly its a classic map like the old Arden Map.

FWIW I like the interior coastal tint of the middle one, and the un-noisiness of the continental background in the 3rd one. Mountains are fabulous. A Question, though: what's with the quality of the stroke around the coast? The black and underlying brown (it looks like) don't match up. Spots like these: 57786

SK, have you ever considered using a smaller-grained background texture? For instance, if you were to shrink this particular background pattern so that the penned lines of the (gorgeous) mountains did not so much appear to be dwarfed by a very closeup view of a piece of paper? If that makes any sense? The pixel details just seem a bit mismatched.

@ Mr. Montague: They are supposed to be "Ink-Errors", in a new version I have modified such to match better.

@Chashio: Mylady, as always your pointed critic saved my day. How could I be so blind about this detail?

I integrated booth surgestions into the new Version.

Ok, here is a new Version full preview of the Map with the Rhumblines. Whats missing are still the Compass and some texture to the sea.
Next will be the Hills and forests and Kingdomborders. I also Aplied -Max's- distressed linework technic on this map, which seems to look fine. I used noise on other maps before but never with a inner glow.

The acute and often annoying attention to detail comes from training my eyes to watch out for bugs and spiders in my vicinity and Australian shepherd fur everywhere.

I like that effect you created by using a thin highlighted accent on the inner edge of the coastline ink... that, with the soft shading... and with the rhumblines in place... it really makes the land-forms pop. It's striking :)

not sure i like the the rhumb lines that dark. they seem too stark to me

Texture looks much better and I'm looking forward to see how this one develops. I agree with Vorro though that the lines are a bit dark.

A bit of booth i fear. When i created the pattern the initial lines seems to be very thick, hmmm look like i have to redo them.

Wonder what the rhumblines would look like if they were thinner, lighter, and a different color ink (red or blue maybe)... Just a thought :) I know you're going for a particular look.

Well, i agree that i will redo them, but color beside the brown tint is rather unlikely onthis

WIP spirit! :D dark redish might be nice, especially if you use same color later, maybe on icons or labels.

Yes, thats what I love about this Community. The people over at Boardgamegeeks are not so enthusiastic...

As soon as I am back at home and sort through my commissions and send the clients new WIPS, I am back at the Southern Domain.
Sanguine Red seems to be the overall favorite.
@-Max-: Yes I think I may use that for the Icons, the red Icons are classic

I think you could mix and match a bit more with your mountains...a lot of the same mountains in there...and you have so many beautiful ones. You're kind of "the mountain king" :D
And i agree with what Chashio said about the rhumblines (they are too dominating right now). Red might be nice.

And i totally get what Max meant in his first post about the noise (grain) ... but i think that is better now.

Very much looking forward to how this will look like when it is finished.

Hmmm are there so many repeating mountains? I used at least 50 different ones.
But maybe with the hills, this will be solved.

The thing that bothers me a bit about mountains is that some have thicker outlines than others. It seems that you have scaled down some to make smaller ones and that's a bit of shame. Btw I'm on skype if you want to jump in ;)

I quite like the mountains you've made here! Overall it looks great! I find the uneven black lines of the coast distracting though.

Ok here is a real update on the Southern Domains. I made new and better rhumblines, half as thick as the others, and also included the Hills at the Mountain feet. Next will be Rivers and Country Borders and at last Cities and Roads and Trees. I should mention that the Sea outside the Continent is a Sandsea, there is no real ocean of water in this World.

its a pretty common trope in dying earth/post-apoc setting. the seas dry up and leave lots of silt. the Dark Sun setting is probably the one that most obviously pops to mind to me. my own world has a few, also.

I have to agree with it, this is kind of distracting.

The rhumblines are better and the color fits the map nicely.

Which shadow ones? The ones at the edge of teh continents are affected by the Texture.

Lowering the opcaity of those mountains or erasing abit of texture should solve the issue I guess.

After some talks with Max, I think I will remake the Mountain arrangements. It still dont "feel" right somehow and I want this to look great.

Yes, i tried to draw the shading in Straight lines. This time my aim is to adapt to a real Blaeu feel on them. Still need to do some more large Mountains, maybe 18.
