...of the Kingdom Tzantiz, the Ruler of the 5th House and Master of Cribbage. I couldn't think of a name, so the obvious choice is to ramble, because after you read it the first time, the Players forget and you can quiz them on it later.

I used some of the bits from Ascension's tutorial on the Swiss Alps sort of map to get my started but I'm starting to slowly diverge from it. The colors will probably be place holders.

Looks good so far, Psylence!

I really like the mountains you have. However, the rivers seem a bit 'forced'. For example, there is an island with a very short river but a massive delta. Actually, I've noticed that there are an awful lot of deltas (too many?).

Psylence

Hm... Possibly Thurlor. I might want to cut down on my deltas, specifically the ones more toward the north as the ones in the cove I think make the most sense. The one with a ton of tributaries is a tidal as that area of ground is lower and the river is slower. The one that runs from the lake is faster running, on more of a downhill slant, and wouldn't be taking the brunt of coastal wave motion is a river dominated. The one on the island to the far east as well as several others seemed like they would be wave dominated due to the motion of the ocean - but those are the ones I'll be cutting down.
That particular one in question, on the island, I'll be reworking soon - it's supposed to be more swamp than straight delta; however, the current update doesn't have these changes in yet as I just saw these posts. =)

Thanks for the encouragement Lingon! Glad you're liking it. :)

And without further ado:

*edit* I lied, I went back in and fixed up the deltas some to display it correctly.

The paper texture is just a temporary one.

Looking really good so far! And I love the purple-ish ocean. It compliments the green terrain wonderfully! :)

I like it and I'm curious to see how it will evolve.
I'm not particularly fond of that frame though, a think a thinner one could be better...but it's a matter of taste, I suppose.

Wow, what a difference! This'll be really great when it's done! The swamp on the island looks very swampy now :)

@Neyjour - Give it a look, after you posted I went back in and just edited the picture to the newer version. I removed a couple deltas and changed that island.

@fabio p - I'm not in love with it either, it's what I had pre-made as I don't have a lot of borders yet. I wanted to get it hashed out as far as where everything is going to be, etc, etc. I might use a thinner frame as well, but I'm not sure - might just give it the illusion of a thinner frame by using some positive/negative space.

@Lingon - Thank you! I hope it will be for sure. :)

@Thurlor - Assuming you drop back by again, how do you feel about the rivers now? And the deltas?

Alright, in case anyone wants to toss in some specific critique, I got a couple questions.
That Eastern island that's kinda skinny-lookin'. Does it look like swamp or jungle? I tried to do jungle, but I don't think I got jungle, I think I got swamp.

On the mainland(not the sideland) I have that tidal delta, does it look like it goes from sandy->swampy->plains-y?

Neyjour

The skinny island looks more like swamp to me as well. I think it may be because there's too many rivers? Maybe try a single river from each of the main mountain portions (top and bottom-left) without any branching?

With the tidal delta, your "swampy" part looks a bit too brown for that. I'd try a darker green, like what you have on the "don't know if it's swamp or jungle" island. :P

Want to know which island is my favourite? The one at the top left of the island "circle". I keep looking at that one and thinking how much I'd LOVE to see a full-size map for it!! I just love the general shape, and how the mountains curve around that inner portion with all the islands. :D

@Neyjour - Gave it a whirl. I think that might have worked. It does look a bit more jungle to me, though I'm still interested to hear what others think about it. As far as that small island, yeeeah, it's one of my favorites too.

Alright, I think this'll be the last update for today. I've added regional areas, a few cities(yet unnamed), towers & keeps(Don't worry, there will be a legend eventually), roads, and other stuff. Critique welcome, as always, and I hope you enjoy the left hand side as well. As before, this paper texture is just a hold over till I get out and buy me some paper to go all origami on.

OH! Almost forgot. Does anyone know how to make a nice looking border? I could use some help with that.

Yeah, I think the jungle island looks much better now! :)

The left hand portion of the map is looking good! And I really like all your font choices.

I hope someone can help you out with border options. The one you've got now is a bit too overpowering, IMO.

Looking good so far Psylence, there are a lot of interesting things going on! I like the style of your map key, simple but effective.

I struggle with borders as well, but I know that arsheesh has a quick tutorial floating around here somewhere covering the basics...
http://www.cartographersguild.com/tutorials-how/15037-%5Baward-winner%5D-making-map-borders-gimp.html

I think I agree with fabio p that it would be interesting to see this with a thinner neat line.

This really looks good. I like the style and the idea behind the map. I would second using arsheesh's excellent tutorial I have used it to create many borders :)

Alright, so I have a border now that's a bit better. I'm still not happy with it. One of these days I should sit down and really think about how to make a fancy border instead of this sort of stuff. But for now it'll do. Just an update on the borders today, nothing else yet - I might pull this later tonight and put up a different version, I'll be sure to include an edit message if I do. Thank you everyone for the heads up on Arsheesh's tutorial, it's a good start. :)

I think that border looks fine. Sometimes a very fancy border can detract from the actual map. :)

I agree with jtougas...a fancy border would probably be too distracting for this type of map. I think what you've done with this one looks really good! :)

Oh you all... stop, you're gonna make me blush! ;)

But seriously, thanks for the feedback on the border. At first I wasn't all that happy with it, but the more I look at it the more I stroke my beard(Thank you no-shave November) and give a little nod of approval.

@Arsheesh - Thanks, coming from the person who made the tutorial, I appreciate the praise. :)

@jtougas & Neyjour - I'm definitely starting to get that impression too.

Lastly, I lied(I gotta stop doing that, seriously) I'm updating it again today. I intended to grab some coffee an work on my pencil and paper artwork, instead I spent most of the day labeling and legend(uh daaaary)-ing? Legendry? Working on the friggen Legend.

*edit* Boosted the font size of most of my labels. Quick side notes:
1) Yes, I forgot to add in the roads versus trade roads.
2) Nice catch Neyjour, got it fixed already.

The legend looks great! One minor nitpick though...it kinda bothers me how the roads on the bottom left touch the border. :P Maybe try shifting everything over to the right a tiny bit, so it's not touching and they're all a bit more centered in the box?

Sorry about the delay in responding but family issues have been my primary focus lately.

Anyways, the rivers and deltas all look great now. Wasn't meaning to be over critical or anything earlier.

I love the colour scheme and the labeling.

Does the legend need 'neat lines' around it? They sort of look out of place and are the wrong scale.

Psylence
11-28-2013, 02:46 AM
@Thurlor - I wasn't sure on the lines. I was debating about it. It's just a mask so I can easily remove it and I might take another look at it without. I actually scaled the lines so they're, roughly, 3-to-1 because it looked the cleanest of the options. 1-to-1 even set up opposite looked funny as did 2-to-1. I didn't try 4-to-1. But I digress, I'll take a look at it without the 'neat lines' around it again. Thanks for the feedback Thurlor. =)

As far as the rivers, oh I didn't think you were being overly critical but it's still good input. After all, for every person that voices their thought there's probably another couple that didn't or haven't yet. Besides, it made me readdress how I was doing things in some of the places, and it allowed me to explain it so others would have a chance to see what I was going for and tell me if I was successful in the execution.

@Neyjour - Addressed your comment in my post with an edit. I gotcha on that observation, already fixed it thanks.

Minor nitpick: the "Dwarven lands" label look a little odd sitting in a lake ;)

Otherwise, awesome. The frame and cartouche are great. I'm not really a fan of the color glow style of nation border you are using, at least not in this type of map; it's cool on old-looking parchment style maps where some color is needed, but in this more colorful type it becomes too much, I think. It's probably just a matter of personal preference, but I think something like a dashed or dotted dark line could work better here.

Psylence
11-29-2013, 02:20 PM
I gave it a shot. I agree, it's better using a dashed line. Of course then it started to blend into my roads, so I had to redo my roads. That then made me realize that I could rework the roads a little and... well you know how it is. Longer story shorter, here's my newest update to the map.

Looking good! I like the changes to the roads and region borders. :)

One teeny little thing I noticed is that the legend box needs to be moved over to the right about 1 pixel (there's a very thin line between the cream and brown), or down a pixel to create a matching thin line at the top as well. Also, maybe you could try bumping up the contrast of the land a bit? The colours on whole map look a little bit soft and hazy, which looks really nice on the ocean portion, but bumping up the contrast on the land might make it pop a bit more. :)

Waiting on the paper. I had to order the stuff through the internet, couldn't find a place nearby that sells decent paper. I have a couple ideas and have already started toying with the contrast and brightness a little - not to mention my paper layers themselves. Long story short, once I get the paper I'll put up the next version. Thanks for the input, Neyjour. :)
