View Full Version : Unnatural mountain formation?

I was wondering if there was a way I could represent an unnatural formation on a world map.

Basically, there is a large continent separated by two mountain ranges that have a small area in the middle. Like this ~| |~ However the mountain range is supposed to look like a giant wave of water facing out from each other ) ( It was created by magic to separate two people groups. I'm using GIMP, am a newbie, and can't really draw by hand. Is there a way to make this or should I just make a normal mountain range on the map and not worry about it, keeping in mind what it looks like in my head?

Let me know if you need a better description. Thanks!

Would this look something like the great rift valley in Africa?

Something like it, yes. Didn't even know about that, haha. It'll have a crest at the top too. Something like this:

Hope that helps.

You could look at this for inspiration : https://www.google.ca/search?q=asteroid+impact&client=firefox-a&hs=kGa&rls=org.mozilla:fr:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=voK3UoOPK6SbygHxwoGoBA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1920&bih=976#q=asteroid+crater&rls=org.mozilla:fr:official&tbm=isch

To do something that would look like that, I recommand that you take a look at Torstan's tips about cliffs here. http://www.cartographersguild.com/tutorials-how/16819-%5Baward-winner%5D-assorted-tips-tricks-5.html

And also 2 other links of mountain style that I think could suit your vision :
