View Full Version : Dec/Jan 2014 liteChallenge: MiltonMills village

12-29-2013, 03:02 PM
I have only done a few village maps in the past, but I used a new technique (new for me anyway) recently so I am working on a new map for this challenge.

The grass background is a modified grass by Hero339 (from DA) with water and gravel textures from cgTextures.

Good start Bogie. I know this will be filled with interesting objects. :)

Thanks, I am going to try to add mostly objects that I made myself.

I have added some of the houses, the bridges and the waterfall.

I think there's some problem with the buildings roofs shadows. Since you're using elements that you've probably rotated, some buildings don't have the sahdows in the same direction.

Yeah, the shadows are already on the roofs. So the best I could do is try to keep the shadows down and to the right as much as I could. Once I get all the buildings on the map, I will try to correct the shadows as much as I can.

Since the shadows on some buildings seems light, you can probably build some heavy ones on the opposite side to make the trick.

Added more buildings and some of the smaller lanes. Need to add trees and details.

it is looking good.

How did you make the waterfall? it looks great.

Thanks Ken, I used this waterfall cover from the Dundjinni Forums. I altered the shape, then used a 50% transparency and layered several copies. Then I used a transparent Ocean Foam cover to make the downriver foam.

Everything looks great ...

Those waves really are huge for such a small stream and such a small pond.

01-04-2014, 04:41 PM
Awesome, that is going into the bag of tricks.

I must agree with Mark with regards to the waves. I think perhaps they'd work being slightly more subtle too. Otherwise yes, the rest of the map looks great.

Thanks for the advice Mark and Larb. It took about 6 attempts, but I figured out a way to make the waves smaller without having to redo the whole thing.
I also started adding some trees.
How does the lake look now?

That's a distinct improvement, and so are the trees. The waves still are a bit out of scale, but not distressingly so.

Looks neat :)

You might consider re-visiting the road to blend it in with the surrounding terrain. Right now, I think the edges are too smooth.
Plus, the paths fall short and end in curves when they come to the buildings.

But I think adding detail is one of your strengths, and that's why your maps are so interesting.
Keep up the great work :)

Thanks guys, I did work on the road edges and finished adding trees and some other details. Might be done, might still tweak it a little more.

Wow this looks really nice!!

I love your waterfall and the (is it a mill?) With the water wheel! So much detail!! You even put a fallen tree at the top of the river. :)

Your trees make me jealous.

What's that circle of stones in the top right? Half finished building? Old ruins? MAGIC POWER CIRCLE? lol. It's lovely.

01-09-2014, 08:58 AM
Thanks Jalyha. For me the area in the upper right is old ruins, who knows what is beneath them, but they could be what ever you want them to be.

01-09-2014, 10:49 AM
I was figuring it was ruins. I like this sort of map with all the little details... makes it fun to look at, and no symbols to confuse my brain. I don't know what that means from a map-making perspective, but I really like it. :)

Thanks, glad you like it. As an RPG battlemap the players have to explore and find out what the buildings are, so no labels needed.

Formost correctly pointed out that I was sloppy with the sidewalk to building interface, so I fixed all of them.
