View Full Version : December/January 2014 Lite Challenge Entry: The village of Crescent Lake

So... I'm not sure where the line is between a drawing/painting and a map? But I have a basic idea for a village map thingy. (If it will count as a map?) I'm new to mapping, but I'm fairly good at sketching/painting, and I think I could make a decent hybrid. :p

Anyway, this is my plan, and I'm going to work on it and make it look descent, but before I do, I wanted to place it here as an idea, and if it DOESN'T count as a map, just let me know and I will withdraw it gracefully, and try an aerial view instead. :D

Okay thanks, here's my idea (decent-ish sketch to follow soon).

Technically, a map is considered a visual
representation of an area. However, most think
there's more to it.

Here's the difference between a painting and a map;
a map will provide information about what is being
shown. In this case, because it's a village, I can
imagine you will be able to do some labeling with
important buildings or locations. Some background
might also be nice.

You also mentioned something about perspective,
but I don't think this has as much effect. You can give
us the information about the place however you'd like.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you will do :)

Thanks! That actually explained just what I wanted to know. I'll actually do some real work on it, now that I know I can (probably) make it into a real map :) (Or die trying).

Speaking of tropes... the village of Crescent Lake is something I included in my (for lack of a better word) novel. I deleted what I'd written because it was too cliche... and entirely inaccurate as far as demographics go. But it gives me something to map. :D

Edit: Small progress... I sketched in a woodsy area on the plateau, made the houses look a TINY bit less like my 4 year old drew them, and painted in the water. (Used the "clone" tool, and the pool bottom pattern and just played with some effects. :)

Coming along good!

Thanks!! I like drawing a LOT, and this GIMP thing makes the painting part a lot more forgiving. :) I'm pretty happy.

Think I backed myself into a corner, though.... Everything I try to do with the houses looks so wrong :(

Added a bit more shading to the grass, and FINALLY got my first house done :)

I probably won't finish on time, but it's something to do :)

Okay, so ...

I made a mistake and I *cannot* make a map of this area from this point of view... it's just not working. I'm going to try to fix it, in a more conventional style, but I'm sure it won't be done on time. But it will be better than what I have now... :/

Is starting over even allowed?

You can do whatever you want.

I'd keep it in one thread though. What's holding you
back from completing your map via this perspective?

If it's the houses or buildings, which I'm guessing
might be the case, consider asking a cartographer
who has done maps from this perspective before how
they conquered the task. You will find very experienced
mappers here. And they're normally willing to help.

What you've done so far really does look neat,
though I'll admit it's hard to see where you might
go. Best of luck.

No, it's not that. I drew the houses/buildings. At least... reasonable sketches for them, all that's needed, really, is some color.

And if I have color on the terrain, then I need it on the houses.

So.. I started "painting"... and with the houses arranged anywhere near appropriately, the paint isn't the problem: too many important buildings will be hidden by other structures. There's no way to *map* them from this angle.

So it would be a GORGEOUS painting... but not a good map.

I might finish it, anyway, but it won't be a map, so not appropriate for the contest.

And I'm thinking that's why most maps are top-down, so I want to try the more traditional route :)

So I did the land, as best I could from that view. and now I'm back where I was stuck before - houses.

If anyone knows how to fix either problem, I'd be grateful, but I don't think I can fix *this* issue.

But if it's not allowed to change your entry, I'll bow out gracefully :D

You're good. :)

Thanks for being supportive, people :)

Well, it's not going to win any beauty contests, but at least I've added in some buildings:

I'm starting to hope I can finish before the contest ends!

Sorry guys. I overestimated myself.

I would have been able to manage with my short attention span, or with having to start over.

I could have made it even with the late entry, or with the unforseen time-gulping events.

I was not, however, able to deal with the combination of all of these things, and so I am left with an unfinishedmap, unworthy of sharing contest space with the fine work created by the other entrants. I will continue working on this piece after the close of the competition, but for now, I am left with only this:

My apologies. Best of luck to everyone else~! :D

Okay, I don't know what I did on the last map, but I'm going to keep improving what I can until it's closed off.

If that's not okay, my last entry before 9pm last night was the attachment in the previous post!
