Geometry made me think of the endless stellar ocean ...

So, I'm going to map some star-thingy map.
Big challenge for me, too, since my only contact with sci-fi has been Traveller; 20something years ago (omg ..)

Anyways, here goes:

Heck yeah star map. The guild needs more of these. I'm eagerly anticipating updates on this bad boy.

Those charts look really good!!

What are the stars in that formation? I love stars that make *recognizable* pictures :D

That's very nice! I really like star maps! I'm loving this challenge's entries.
Not that you need to, but just as a curiosity, if you want to simulate the solar system to get the orbits/distances/etc there are pretty good softwares out there.

Very cool entry!

Thanks for your comments :)

The stars (or rather: the systems' names) are some kind of "test your inner geek".
I won't reveal anything here. Use your Google-fu to explore the quadrant on your own ;)

There are softwares for solar systems?
Where?
(And btw: I'm well aware, that the system I designed here is NOT to scale! If I wanted to put everything into proper scale, the system would visually disappear..)

Kind regards,
Kai

Ha, fun! I already got a lot of them!

Oh yea, pretty good ones at that. I'm not on my computer, tomorrow I'll get the names and post here (I only know linux ones tho). And yeah, to map a star system you have to drop the scale, otherwise its just a black screen lol

This is a very nice entry indeed :)

I wouldn't worry about an accurate scale... no way you'd be able
to achieve that in a practical way. Doing so wouldn't add a lot
to the map either. I like it as it is.

For the first two updates you posted, how'd you get it to show
the dimensions underneath the thumbnail?

One last circle :)

regarding the dimensions: I didn't use the board's upload but used an external service instead: My-Image-Upload.de :: Startseite (http://www.m-i-u.de)

I like your “test your inner geek” naming, even if you’re giving famous planets names to entire systems :P.

I would like to see a shield/flag of planet Fold and maybe, if you have not planned already, I would add a sci fi techno border to the whole thing.

Yes, I know..

Although, if I recall right: In Traveller systems were named after their "main" world ..

A crest sounds like a good idea :)

(To be honest, at the moment I'm stuck anyway, so any kind of suggestion what to do next is cool :))

Oh, and I added a border.

I'm not used at all to sci fi maps, to be honest, so I'm having troubles thinking up a "cool" border ... might need to check the sci-fi section here ...

Here goes the crest of the ruling caste of fold: The church of flight.

According to their credo " 'cause it's easier to fly", the crest depicts a stylized flying device inspired by one of the many flying animals on the planet:

http://www.m-i-u.de/images-i76348bz7exx.png

The crest picks up the requirements of the contest again, combining sqares, circles and some triangles ...

And in case you were wondering: This crest has been done entirely with PowerPoint 2010 :)

Now I need a place to include it :)

It's hard not to meet the requirements since PNG uses pixels and pixels are normally squares. And the symbol look good by the way.

I have an annoying question about your map: Southern Sun subsector; I think it doesn't make sense. Or maybe I'm not geek enough to understand.

:D

Ooookkkk ... so, there is a DJ: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Oakenfold
That's why there is a system Pau I. next to the Oaken system containing the planet Fold.

One of his hits is "Southern Sun" containing the line " 'cause it's easier to fly than to face another night in southern sun"

Another one of his hits is "Café del Mar", a remix of one of the most heared trance hits of the world - and the reason I renamed one of the planets :)

The show goes one right here:

So, yeah ..

I found this thread in the sci-fi Forums:
http://www.cartographersguild.com/sci-fi-modern-mapping/21334-star-sector-home-laser-wars.html

And since someone asked, whether a tutorial for a map like this could be created, I tried to copy the style, trying to find out, whether I could provide a tutorial for a map like this ...

Here is the result:
http://www.m-i-u.de/images-i76452bsb3r4.jpg (http://www.m-i-u.de/display-i76452bsb3r4.html)

Turns out, this map features lots of triangles, squares and circles as well ..

Question: Which one would you prefer?
Which one should I submit?

*undecided*

Kind regards,
Kai

I would keep the second map as the principal map, and I would incorporate the features of the first map into the second, if it is possible. I think they could complement well.

My suggestion exactly. The first image, while nice, reminds me of a video game screen shot capture. The second is more of a map because it depicts a sense of scale and notation.

Ok .. first thing first: Making the second map my "official" entry ..

I hope I can find some time to include some more stuff until this contest is over ..

That looks pretty great! Can I offer a suggestion? Some of your text is lost under the colors of the various states - it's especially noticeable in the Gam-E Confederation. It may look better if you move the text on top of the colors.

Question: Is it possible to modify the title of the thread? I don't want it to be called "Yet unnamed starmap" anymore .. Dumb title, you know?

What do you want it changed to?

I would much prefer the title "Distant Frontiers".

If you can change it, then thank you very much :)

Yet, I'd prefer to be able to Change titles by myself. (Such as "[WIP] Map XYZ" to "[FINISHED] Map XYZ")

Kind regards,
Kai
