I thought I'd try to put together an interstellar empire Guild...

Initial idea...

"Spammaic Horde Incursion" LOL

This looks to be really cool (and way more interesting than a building :P )

Now I want to see it all finished up ^_^

...
Wait are you just trying to keep the cookie for yourself? :o

Well dang, I was thinking of a space themed galactic map too.

It makes me think of EVE Online, and then I imagine I am a newbie pilot, mining the tutorial belts in hi-sec space while leveling up my cartography skills.

I'm really stuck on this. I've abandoned three separate attempts so far. I think I have to simplify; I'm trying to do too much with it.

Jalyha

I do that all the time. :)

Just try to focus on one little thing at a time without even thinking of anything else ^.^

Any progress on this map? I'm really looking forward to seeing another Diamond diamond.

I'd like to say yes, but I'd be lying. I had it all planned out in my head, and it all fell apart in the execution.

If I have time, I'm going to restart. It'll still be a Guild Empire, but as an overland map. Yeah, a fall back to my comfort zone, but I just can't get the outer space one to come together.

Diamond

Okay, let's try this again. I've only got one more free day, tomorrow, to work on this...

I decided to map one hemisphere of a planet whose main polity is the Guild Empire.

Ooh, is this going to be another one of those all night challenges? Cause last time you pulled one of those there was a new contribution to my inspiration folder ;)

Cheers,

Cool map, Diamond. I'm curious to see how you'll fill it in :)

Thanks to Torstan for the paper texture.

I figured the first thing I named was very appropriate... :D

Well, the heavy lifting is done. I won't have too much time in the next couple of days, but let's see if I can get some more done...

A note on names: I went through the ENTIRE member listing. The two major criteria I stuck to was 1) the member had to have at least 100 posts, and 2) had to have been active within the last year or so, to get their name on the map. There are a few exceptions: names that had a lot of numbers in them that I couldn't make work, names that were too long, and I'm sure I overlooked a few. I also changed and/or mangled some of your names... my apologies. It's all in good fun. :D

Great map. I think my chances of winning just dropped dramatically. I especially like my speech center, on the outskirts of civilisation.

I think you should probably be disqualified though, because you've got Korash twice. Rookie ;)

Very much so :D ;)

And i think it is very fitting that i got to be a mountain :D I guess a forest would have worked as well but i am satisfied, Diamond ;)

Very cool map! If i can, i'll rep you. And a Like is guaranteed.

D'OH!! I forgot he was a River Police State... I'll fix that tonight.

Awesome map! I'm imagining the 44 dominoes as a town made out of 44 big dominoes. :)

Some minor fixes, a slight blur on the corner boxes (still not sure what, if anything, to put in there), and a couple more labels.

I think I've spotted another problem with this map. Where is the lair of the Diamond monster?

Diamond Mountains, all the way off at the eastern edge.

This is brilliant, Diamond! Some of the names are just great… The twin lairs of cartographers, The great Atlas, and the 44 Dominoes are my favorites. And of course, Lingonopolis! :D

It’s me, or the shape of this “Cartographia” has a strong resemblance to an already well know fantasy land :P?
Anyway, great job, as always.

It reminds me of the Middle Earth. No, this is the Left Justified Continent.

"the Great Atlas of Vorropohaiah"... impressed :D

the relief is really nice - would like to now how it's done

Diamond

I'm glad you guys like it. :D It actually didn't occur to me until now how much it looks like Middle Earth... it wasn't intentional. "Left Justified Continent" - ha!

Vorro - the relief was probably the easiest part of it - I did the same thing I did on that Paksennarion map in the challenge a while back. It's just pieces of real-Earth online atlas, merged and rotated and meshed to make something interesting. I spherized it to match the shape and size of the hemisphere, then just masked out the ocean bits. There was some rough pixellation at the eastern edges, and I went in with the blur tool and softened it up a bit there. The northern ice cap and a bit of that far southern land I painted a little, especially the ice cap, to make them look a little nicer.

cant seem to find that thread in a search. any idea where you got that map from?

Diamond

You mean the atlas bits? I honestly don't remember. I never had a 'complete' online atlas; I just took screenshots of interesting bits and pieces back years ago and they've been following me from hard drive to hard drive ever since.

Great Map Diamond! See what you can accomplish when you don't have to run the challenge.;)

I think this has by far had the most effort put into it insofar as thought and creativity of the naming. Most of the other entries have felt more like maps with mentioning Guild member names in a really uninspiring uncreative manner. This has a lot of time and effort both on the map and the labeling.

I think it's a bit harsh. Of course you're right, Diamond's map is really an inspiring work but THW shown a very creative map on this challenge for instance.

Diamond

Thanks for the compliment, CC, but I agree with Max in that THW's map is really much more imaginative than mine.
