Hey all,

You all know that the Guild, beside its usual buildings, is the owner of a tower, located somewhere north of the city in the hills, don't you? This is where lie some of the most protected secrets of its rulers. It is said that there is the secret archives of the Guild there, some rooms filled with the most beautiful maps ever made and even the cartography workshops of the masters of the Guild themselves. I was recently promoted as a community leader of the Guild, which gave me the chance and the honour to visit the tower (at least some parts of it). I think it's time to lift the veil on this remarkable place.

So, end of the useless speach :D I decided to go outside my comfort zone for this challenge (if ever I have the time to finish it) an try some different map. I started with a rough draft of the tower itself.

I always get excited when I see Max's name in a competition. Like I do with djekspek's!

:D I'll try to give a shot to the colors quite quick since I don't know how much time I'll have this month to finish it. Hopefully I'll be done with the color work today.

FINALLY! Been waiting several HOURS! You're so slow at this! :D

Seriously though, it's looking awesome. The color choices are great. And it's really cool to see something like this from you!

Lol Lingon - I read that as a serious comment as first.

I was like ... "You have GOT to be kidding... oh wait, you're kidding"

*drumbeat*

"Hey that's funny!!!"

... anyway... Looks great, as ever, Max. :)

Alright so here are some more detailed steps of the coloring stage (all was done with the same brush, a grungy one with dynamic settings - opacity pressure, size pressure, angle variation)

First step : Base colors done. Solid color with full opacity for the roofs and some details (door, pillars...) to make them pop up a bit and a bit of transparency for the tower and rocks to help making them blend with the background
61315

Second step : Shades. Done with two steps, first a base shade, then a deeper shade, to help define all the elements. That also helped to dirty up the things a bit
61316

Third step : Lights. DIdn't went to deep on them to keep some contrasted but smooth look.
61317

Last step, some details and some slight and subtle additional colors

Fantastic Max! AND I have my own room!!!! And it has a window that looks out at the gate so I can sit there and watch everyone come and go. I know someday they'll unlock my door so I can go out too,,,,,someday. I just knew I should have been more polite to the King when he visited, but he was wearing that silly hat and I couldn't stop myself from commenting, DUH.

I don't really participate in monthly challenges anymore, but when I did, I was usually completed the map anywhere between 1 and 4 days, most in a single day. If I drag my feet and let the map making process last too long, I get bored, lose interest and the quality goes down, not up.

All the better for the competitors, muhahah... :P

Kidding though, but wow that's impressive ^.^

I'm the opposite... I tend to rush through things and do a sloppy job at first, and then peck away at it till it's right :)

Coming along very nicely :) Though I am a little on the fence about the effect on the text. Everything else looks beautifully painted, but the text seems sort of carved? Into the paper? Not sure how that would be done :P

I had to go pretty fast on this one since I probably wouldn't have that much time later in the month ;)

There's still plenty of time to enter the challenge this month :P

Indeed, you're quite right, I'm not fully satisfied with the text, I'll try something different once I'll be done with the next legend.

You don't only have a room, you even have the whole little tower for you! ;)

I absolutely love this. It's very original, and I love that you've actually mapped out each floor of the main tower. Great job. :)

Thanks guys! :) I wish I had more time dedicated to this challenge to credit more CG members but well I had to focus on the community leaders. This was also a way to thank them for the recent promotion. Anyway, I'm glad that some other entries cover the whole active members subject very well :)
