View Full Version : Suggestion: A map-free map

The central part of most maps is, not suprisingly, the mappy bit, but they also contain cartouches, borders, scale bars, legends, title frames, coats of arms/flags etc. This idea is simple: make a map that leaves out the mappy bit. The winner will be judged on the other components of their 'map.'

This idea might work best if each entry simply leaves a large empty hole in their image, or perhaps everyone has to use the same standard map (although that could limit contestants in style/genre a it).

What do people think?

why not a contest about the elements of the map ?

Oh god. We might as well make it a heraldry challenge. Then people can get as complex as they want!

I think if you just do "map elements" people will still be more caught up in the mappy-bits

I like the idea of white space in the center. a) you can try to make it so vivid that people can *almost see* the map, and b) I struggle with white space :P

How about a map of a map?

How about a map of a map?

I did a map for an Iron Crown Enterprises map contest of a temple in my photo-realistic style, but I included a map room, and on a table were 3 of my hand-drawn maps from other projects. I've kind have done that on my own, already! ;)

not mapception (a map within a map within a map, although that's an excellent Idea.) a map OF a map. You have to map a map. I would leave that open to interpretation, but one rule would be that it couldn't just be a map within another map. You would have to map the elements of a map. Or tropes. or something.

God. that was confusing.

A meta-map. Not a bad idea, but I think I prefer my original suggestion.

I think it's doable. Challenging, but could be done ^.^

Happy 666th, Azelor.

I've put together a really quick mockup of the kind of thing I envisaged (based on Green Havens--hope it's ok with you to use this image, Max). Basically, the finished image in the challenge could include a title box/cartouche, compass rose, border, scale bar, legend etc. It just wouldn't include the map. I think for many people (certainly for me) these extra details are an afterthought, and not much time is spent on them. What would people come up with if they were focussing on those features exclusively? Imagine if people spent several days on the compass rose, rather than a single hour. Is that a bit clearer?

Yes, it's crystal clear now Thanks ;)

I think it would be a wonderful idea.

This could be neat.

I like the idea. It gives us all a chance to be as arty as we want to be without worrying about the actual map itself ;)
