View Full Version : February/March 2014 Lite Challenge: Hansel & Gretel

Hi folks!

Thought I'd have a bash at the Challenge this time - some great stuff going on already, though, so I'm probably bringing up the rear here :)

That said, I decided to go with a storytelling map of Hansel & Gretel (complete with story!). Started out with a basic layout, then added some rough buildings and carried it on with the text. I've just got done putting details on the houses, next step is to detail the forest, then start colouring!

Hey that is lovely! Very nice work so far.

Excellent work! It is OK to post more than one image on a post, but sometimes the WIP thingy picks up the wrong one.
Just be sure your last post only has one image in it.

Thanks guys!

I've done a bit more work on it now; base colours are done and I've added a little more detail.

It's probably not too important but FYI, I've done all of this by hand - even all of the lettering! Took me bloody ages lol!

Very nicely detailed. I'm liking it so far. I can imagine it took a long time!

I've done enough calligraphy (or more correctly butchered enough) to know how long that must have taken. Hats off to you.

Thank you very much guys :D

I'm done with the map, now but I thought I'd just throw a little border around it before calling it quits... Having said tbat, I think that, with the style I've chosen, I've bitten off more than I can chew!

And yeah, it's taken me a while, lol!

The lettering is great! Really unique looking map, I'm in awe.

I like it as it is, but if you have the time, as you planned, I would too add a border.

Thanks again, folks!

I'm not done with the border but I thought I'd show you where im headed with it.

As you can (hopefully) see, I've tried to incorporate other fairytales into the design of the border. I don't do borders often, but having seen how awesome peoples' maps are with borders just made me want to give it a go!

This is just fantastic!

Oh neat.... it's like fairy tale hieroglyphics along the border. :D

02-28-2014, 02:05 AM
I hadn't thought of it like that - but that's exactly what they are lol! :D

03-04-2014, 06:06 PM
Right, it's taken me ages but I've finally finished my border! I'm not 100% happy with it - it's not quite now I'd imagined it, but I think it sort of works :)

This has been a lot of fun and I've never done anything like it before so I'll definitely be having a cracking at the next one!

Cheers all!

It's hard to make out, but I think I recognize the "three little little pigs" and "the big bad wolf". Is that correct? Are all the little glyphs around the border tied to some fairy tale element?

03-04-2014, 06:27 PM
Thanks Xeonicus, yeah - they're like the key points from other fairy tales (or, at least, they're supposed to be!) I didn't know whether to list them or make a little game of seeing who can guess the most lol!

That border might have taken a few years out of your life but it was well worth it. I will have to stare at it for ages let alone the rest of the map. The little houses are perfect both in the detailing and the style match to the rest of it. I wish I had some useful criticism for you but you'll have to seek that from wiser minds than mine.

That border is wonderful! This would make a very nice page in a book of fairy tales. Nice work on the houses too.
