Making a rather late entry here, but I'll try to finish:lol:
So I've been thinking of mapping something from the perspective of an underwater species for some time, with a detailed ocean floor and completely featureless islands, like how we usually draw water quite blank on our land-perspective maps. I was originally thinking of making something quite modern, not really modern maybe but similar to my Antillia or Tartaros Basin maps (though I had the idea for the underwater map before I made those, so I don't know why I haven't gotten around to this yet!). That wouldn't quite fit the theme for this challenge, but something made in the early days of the same civilization might. An inscription in some hard material came to mind, like a shell from some weird fantasy sea animal. I don't know how to make carvings though, so I'll cheat and paint one :P

Honestly, I don't know if this is a good idea at all… It doesn't really look like a carving, it's obviously a picture of something that's supposed to be a carving… But if it's not totally worthless, I'll add some more stuff, like ocean floor forests :)

welcome to the contest and congrats for your entry, the work on shadows is really subtle and works well for me.

You have the basics for a very nice start, I'd say.

This looks very cool. Perhaps include an undersea trench or volcano or other geographical features. At the moment the only interesting terrain is where the sea ends and the land begins. It'd also be interesting to see evidence of big human communities: surely they would mark on ports and fishing areas as points of interest.

Anyway, I think it looks great. You obviously got me thinking! :D

My three-d printer is down at the moment :-) so as far as I'm concerned a painting of a carving is just fine. Marvelous, as a matter of fact, if you keep going in the current vein!

I'm a big fan of carved maps just now and this looks like it could be carved into sandstone or something similar that would last under water. I hope you get to finish it, it's an excellent beginning.

cheers,
Meshon

Thanks guys! :) Unfortunately I don't think I'll have time to work on this more, so… another one in my pile of unfinished maps… But I'm glad you liked the beginning, and maybe I'll pick it up again when I've dealt with some other stuff :)
