Here is the begining of my entry. The idea is to make a map of the universe but as seen by a primitive race who have been visited by aliens over time. So there are pictures of a rocket, galaxies and images of the aliens, planets moving in retrograde and what might be a space-suit helmet.

The style and colours are a mixture of Mayan and Chinese with some other motifs thrown in. There is still a long way to go with this, Another annulus around this one will have a star chart as drawn by the primitive race...well that's the idea anyway!

Absolutely brilliant idea Ravs!

Almost like a Mayan/Incan/Aztec Stargate.

I's rep ya just for the idea, but I gotta spread the love around some more....

Thanks Guys. It's still a long slog to the finish it though and I'm not sure if I have bitten off more than I can chew time-wise.

wow what an entry ravs :) Great idea for sure :)

How did you it? Did you draw the elements?

Thanks Sagenlicht, it was all done in Seriff draw plus which is like a poor man's adobe illustrator (but can do about 90%) of what illustrator does and is much easier to use. These days I use it to draw most of my maps if I'm not using photoshop.

Next stage, working outwards. I'm not really happy about the patterns around the alien faces, they look a bit too haphazard. Thinking of rearranging the red dots on the outer ring to make some kind of counting or co-ordinate system, but the regualar repeat looks nice.

I'm learning a lot with this 'map', particularly using the pen tool.

I can so see using this map in a Pulp adventure game. Mind you, my Pulp adventure games are "flashbacks" from my space opera game. This would so work as a mural on an ancient Mezoamerican wall. Well done.

I need to get back to finishing the map, but I'm enjoying the 3d work on the museum too much. The map of the museum on the wall might look a tad familiar ... but I'll get rid of it for the final entry - too much plagurism there!

Personally, I love the familiar map on the wall. It fits really well.

The British museum strikes again (I think?).

Looks great. That's a really novel approach to the month's challenge.

Thanks guys, yup it's the british Museum, but the big problem is that the backgrounds are internet downloads so the resolution is not good. I don't work far from the BM so I'll pop in next week and get some proper pictures on my own camera.

All this photoshopping is a lot of fun but it's not improving the actual map any, which is still not much of a map. I think when it comes to the final entry, I'll just put the vanilla map up on its own, perhaps with some sort of explanation as to what it all means (if I finish it in time).

I think the one where the disc is between the asyrian? babylonian? sphinxes is the best of the bunch. Great "fingerprints of the gods" idea here.

I concur, very awesome. Would look even better if it were 'weathered' a bit :D

I'm not happy putting the british museum one up as the final entry, it's too much about the context than the map itself, which I think is unfair, so I've edited the latest WIP as the plain jane (unfinished) plate on its own. Easier to see that way too.
