I have been so long thinking what the eck to do for this month that I really thought I would not be doing one. Then I went to EnWorld and from there is a link to a new forum that Morrus has set up for Dr Who. Ahh now theres a thought. This could solve my token issues !

So I thought id do a pseudo scene from Destiny of the Daleks with the Doctor and Romana and K9 in the cave system (which did happen) with an invasion fleet of Daleks into cave (which didn't happen - at least I dont remember, it was a long time ago). Also I got hold of some Daleks form the web and rendered them up so the types are wrong. Theres a great Davros but its for Poser only and I cant convert native poser models. I might have done that scene where Davros wakes up and the Doctor puts bombs on the side of Davros chair but alas not.

I am still toying with the idea whether to put some Kaleds or Movellans in the scene being zapped by the Daleks and I can use some 1970's high tech BBC inverted colour effect - ohhh. :D

So anyway - bit of a laugh this time. Did a Tom Baker Doctor and a Romana with some paints and then got hold of K9, Tardis and the commander Daleks from Blender Who ! (http://www.blenderwho.co.uk/) which has the most amazing set of Daleks ever !!! Unfortunately Blender UI is so crap I spent most of the evening just getting two rendered properly. I also stole another from Tobors Models (http://www.btinternet.com/%7Etobor/) which also has some great stuff. Former is do what you like and latter is free for non commercial. With latter Dalek I rendered head, body, gun and sucker seperately and then made icons out of each so I can rotate them in my app. I had to color and shade it up myself so I did this in light wave again cos its easier. I will add a gratuitous render of that in a mo.

The other bits are all CGTextures again - god its difficult to make useless bits of industrial junk !!! and the Dalek on fire is some simple fire plus I added a firework photo I had for the sparks which I think works really well.

So if anyone with poser would like to get a model of Davros (http://www.vanishingpoint.biz/freestuff.asp?ClassificationID=8) from a freebie site and convert to .obj for me then that would be great - even if I dont use it here :) but id add him in if I could.

Well, enjoy - this was fun but my mind had a better vision than the result.

C&C's welcome as always.

Love the Daleks and that's definitely the Tom Baker Dr. (can't miss the hair and the scarf).

I think what it needs (and I'm sure you'll get to this) is some shadows, etc. everythin looks 'kind of flat' at the moment.

Great start, looking forward to seeing more.

Yeah absolutely. Its all in 2D tho so it will have to be a paint dub shadows job. I don't even know where all the light sources might be either. Maybe just fudge that and have some random blurry shadows as though from multiple light sources in the ceiling.

Doctor is fiddling with the machine trying to get the force field up. K9 is blasting away taking close calls from the Dalek guns all the while Redrobes is manually adding shadows and highlights trying to keep up with the action...

Here you go. Let me know if the model exported properly. It has an interesting construction of two figures merged into one, and I'm not sure if the obj data can handle that correctly.

There are a few options when exporting that I can tweak if needed.

Thanks thats excellent.

I had to modify the backrest and add some head gear to him. I got a texture map for his face from a promo shot. So here is Davros, mad scientist and leader of the Daleks. I will have to put him in the pic for sure but dont know where he will fit now.

So here is Davros, mad scientist and leader of the Daleks.

Heh... I would more likely call him the creator and "sometime" leader of the Daleks given the history... what a bunch of ungrateful cyborgs...

Heh... I would more likely call him the creator and "sometime" leader of the Daleks given the history... what a bunch of ungrateful cyborgs...Ahh yes, your quite right. They do seem to forever be disobeying the supreme commander. Even in this Destiny episode they were doing it too tho one did scrifice itself to save ole Davros with the explosives.

I have popped him in. Getting busy in that cave I think. I reckon that this must be the last wip.

Oh and merry Christmas and seasonal greetings to all. I had better remove the poison dart traps from the chimney ;)

They were together in one of the last season's episodes about the rift. The Cybermen didn't stand a chance.

You are probably right but Pertwee was just before my time. I only remember just the odd pertwee ep like Sea Devils and maybe one or two more scenes and images. I have seen a few more since on DVDs but they look sooo dated now. I will check tomorrow when I'm meeting a extreme nut job on Dr Who in the shape of my bro. Most of what I know is either from memory or from factual osmosis from him.

Would make a good iron golem too :)

Well.. when I was growing up, they would play Dr Who on PBS over here in the states, so that's how I got to see so many of them. Usually, they would show a whole serial on Saturday's, so I would get to see one entire storyline a week. I think I have seem most of the 3rd, 4th, 5th Doctor's episodes, a probably 1/3 of the 6th,a bare few of the 7th, a tiny few of the 1st and 2nd. It's still hard to believe some idiots got rid of so many episodes of such a great show....

(hey guys, I'm trying a new way of leaving comments to provide better feedback... let me know what you think)

I always enjoy how you're able to capture the action of a story in a map Redrobes. I feel like regardless of your artistic ability, you can always bring a map to life. That being said, I still find some things... distracting. Most notably are the walls, which look like they've taken a few blur effects over the recommend dosage (no doctor pun intended). Instead of looking like cave walls, they look like objects in the way of my viewing because it appears as a depth-of-field effect. It's emphasized further when it overlaps objects, like the legs of the machine. Also, the scene feels a bit disproportionate; my eye gravitates to the bottom right instead of flowing with action.

I know, a bit nit-picky, but I feel like you're skilled enough to handle some high-level criticism :)

TECHNIQUE: ****
STYLE: ****
ORIGINALITY: ***** (woot for a doctor who theme!)

OVERALL: ****½

Recommendations:
1) Clean up the walls... clean up the definition, maybe cast some shadows on the scenery to add realism... It looks like you've spend a lot of time on the characters, so take a moment to devote some work to the environment so they don't appear out of place.
2) Balance the map. Create motion between the characters so the viewer's eye isn't stationary. The laser from K9 feels like a good start, moving the center to the bottom right but it kind of dies there. Find a way to connect the end of the right tunnel to the end of the left tunnel (the "special" darleks help, but aren't enough) and then connect the left tunnel back to the Doctor's area (perhaps a bit of return fire?)

Overall an excellent map really showing off your myriad of skills from modeling to composition to story-telling. Minor flaws are preventing a perfect rating.

Thanks Darken for the good criticisms they are useful and I agree that the cave sides were a bit naff. I also don't like the lackluster techno junk but its hard to make that. The Daleks look too real for the artsy map style but I have been known to mix styles quite broadly in the past too. I have been busy of late what with the holidays and what not so I doubt ill get spare time to fix up the map too much.

I think overall I was not as happy with it as I would have liked but it was boosted by some excellent Dalek models and stuff that I didn't actually make myself. I should have stuck to my guns and used my own script for the walls instead of doing them by hand again and also I wished that I had done the shadows in a layer in ViewingDale instead of using a paint app and modifying the bitmap with layer effects then I could have changed it a bit more easily. I think those two things would have been less effort and quicker plus given more flexibility later on when Davros the model became available.

Oh yes on the Dalek + Cyberman issue I asked and he wasn't sure either and thought maybe with the 'Death to the Daleks' ep. But searching I cant find any ref to Cybermen in that ep or any other with both so I cant help I am afraid. The first seems from my limited ability to find out is the 2005 one with the fight between the two. Or possibly where they find just the head of a Cyberman when the Dalek breaks loose in the London private museum collection. I have to admit tho the thought of both together in an old episode does seem familiar to me too. It might be before my time and I have seen a clip or maybe it was a series of clips cut together where they were next to each other. There was a Dalek ep followed by a Cyberman story which is in fact the 'Genensis of the Daleks' ep of this map followed by 'Revenge of the Cybermen'.

Thats the best I can come up with.
