Just a placeholder for now...

*Cue campy Batman segue music* Meanwhile...a few hours later...

OK, here's a really, really early WIP. Basic land and water done, started outlining the general shape of the city. Still gobs and gobs of work to do.

Thanks guys - This is going to be a @#$%-ton of work to do, it may be my most ambitious piece yet. Hopefully I have time to finish it.

Let's see what Steel General will give us:)

Good luck man. If I were you I'd just use black squares for buildings until the end and if you have the time to go back and then pretty em up.

We'll see, it depends on how much progress I make. I have a bunch of ideas bouncing around in this hollow can I call a skull - hopefully I can get most of them in.

OK here's today's update... finished the towers and walls (Phew! that was a chore), added place holders for bridges and some of the roads.

Interesting.

Its cool to see the layers develop. I find it interesting when a method emerges and I'm no longer trying anything\everything hoping something 'looks good'

OK here's today's update;

1) Finished majority of "Castle Ward" - some minor details still to be added.
2) Finished a good portion of the "Military Fort (Ward)"
3) Added more roads/streets & added some texture to the roads/etc. - still more to do here

That's a great castle shape.

I really like the grass texture - it's almost like gaming table baize. The castle is stunning, did you base it on a real one? The general shape is really nice.

Steel General
02-08-2009, 12:01 PM
@Ascension & Ravs - Thanks, it's based off of Windsor Castle... and the temple in the fort is based off of Temple Church. I'll be using a lot of "real-world" references for this map.

The basic land area is roughly based off of a map of Baghdad from the end of WWII.

Ravs - The grass texture is the "Just Add Bison" texture from Spiral Graphics, I use this one a lot.

ravells
02-08-2009, 02:02 PM
LOL! Temple Church! I was a member of the Inner Temple when I was doing my bar exams and walked past Temple Church every day. I had a girlfriend whose family lived in Ascot and we used to go past Windsor to get there at least once a month...but I guess I never saw them from above!

OK here's today's update...

Started adding the noble 'estates' and when I needed a break from that I started drawing in some of the smaller streets, and dirtied up the inner grounds of the Military Ward.

When I decided to go the route I'm taking on this I knew it would be a lot of work, but phew... I'm not sure I'm gonna get this complete by the deadline.

Anywho...here ya go

I may do that, if I have time, so much still to do on this and only about 2 weeks to finish.

Very nice. I am thinking you might want to connect the Castle and the Military districts with a fortified bridge unless there is a story reason not to.

Very nice. I am thinking you might want to connect the Castle and the Military districts with a fortified bridge unless there is a story reason not to.

Hmmm...never even thought about that - not a bad idea, I'll give it some thought. Initially it was just going to be your standard fort, but I decided to call it a Ward because of it's size.

Steel General
02-11-2009, 06:54 PM
Haven't made a huge amount of progress, but now that all of the noble 'estates' are done (i scrapped a few of them cause they looked terrible) things should pick up a little.

Added a small 'luxury market', some shrubs, fountain-statues, trees (these are an experiment), some more roads. Still a few open areas in the Nobles Ward I haven't quite figured out what to do with yet.

Ascension
02-11-2009, 09:23 PM
Lookin good. All I can really nit is...wouldn't nobles have larger yards/estates for their amusements? Maybe not, I dunno.

This will look awsome when you put in some vegetation to fill it in a bit.

Lookin good. All I can really nit is...wouldn't nobles have larger yards/estates for their amusements? Maybe not, I dunno.

That's a good point, but I'll take a mulligan and say that most have other larger houses/estates outside the city as well.

@Hoel - Thanks, that'll probably be one of the last things I do, as it isn't overly crucual to the map but will definitely help with the over all look.

Right now, I'm more concerned with getting it finsihed before the deadline without rushing it. My shoulder's been bothering me a bit lately and I can only sit and work at the PC for an hour or so at a time.

Steel General
02-13-2009, 06:49 PM
Not a huge update - added some of the temples.

I'm really beginning to doubt as to whether I'll finish in time for the challenge deadline, but I'll keep plugging away at it.

Was able to get several hours in on this here beastie today, but the shoulder is starting to act up so time to take a break.

Finished the Temple Ward, pretty much finished the Bridge Ward (it may need a little tweaking), and started on The Gray Gardens - the city's main cemetery/memorial park.

As always feel free to leave comments, suggestions, etc.

Another good chunk of progress today...I'm actually seeing a tiny, little light at the end of the tunnel (let's hope it's not an on-coming train :D).

Let's see...finished the Gray Gardens, the Maegus College/Ward, the Craft Ward (also contains some bureaucratic buildings). Added some more roads, a couple of carvansary and some labels.

I think that's about it.

It's coming along beautifully! I'm not sure I like the 'stringy' buildings to the west though...the rest of them are gorgeous!

Steel General
02-17-2009, 06:03 PM
Thanks Ravs...

The 'stringy' buildings are groups of small stalls, etc. I wanted them to look at haphazard and 'thrown together'.

PS: I went back and took another look at the market stalls and they didn't seem quite right. So I experimented a bit and removed the outer-walls from them. I think it looks much better now, the change will be included in my next update.

Steel General
02-18-2009, 06:44 PM
One more chunk down (yippee!), 2 more wards to go then all the "other stuff".
This also has the "fix" to the market ward that I did late yesterday.

Did you notice that the lighting comes from the north on the old areas and from the south on the new area? Or is is that the roofs on the new areas don't go up but rather down? Either way, there's a consistency issue.

Steel General
02-18-2009, 09:11 PM
No I didn't thanks for pointing that out. I might have the direction of the bevel reversed, have to check that.

Update: Did a quick check and that's what it was, must've accidentally clicked on it. It'll be fixed in the next update. Thanks again.

Looks great so far.

Is there a chance of getting some colour variation in the roofs? At the moment they are a very uniform grey.

Um, that's all the C&C I can muster! This is a lovely map - and too am jealous of that lovely arena.

Thanks for the comments...

Each ward's buildings have a different color; Craft Ward - blue, Maegus Ward - gold/yellow, Garden ward - green, etc. Granted they are somewhat subtle but I think they are identifiable.

Maybe some of that's getting lost when I "dumb it down" for posting.

torstan
02-20-2009, 06:41 PM
Yep, that was a little subtle. Now that I am looking for it I see it, though if I were pushed I might struggle to define precise boundaries between the regions even now.

Soixante
02-21-2009, 05:29 AM
My only recommendation would be to change the hue on the trees to a slightly warmer shade of green - at the moment it's quite cold, and clashes a bit with the softer tone used for grass.

Other than that, looks great!

Steel General
02-21-2009, 07:40 PM
OK, this beastie is finally done as far as I'm concerned. Are there some things that could be improved/changed/etc. - sure, but after all of the shoulder wrenching hours of work I am simply burned out on this map.

I'm proud of the way it turned out and hope to find some place in CWBP for it - regardless of how well it does in the challenge.

So enjoy, and please still feel free to leave C&C.

Also since several of you commented specifically on the racetrack/Circus Maximus, I have also included a .PSD of just that in case anyone was interested in how I did it.

Good luck to all the entrants, this month's is really going to be a tough vote. :D

Just some minor tweaks to some of the text.

There is a weird color change that happens to some of the trees around the druid circle (southern portion) when I reduce the resolution to post it. I had thought it was a 'tiling' issue with the texture and was going to fix it, but it isn't.

It's nice to see people trawling the archives!!! It's one of the quieter corners of the Guild (down a dark basement somewhere). Whenever I see 'the archive' on the site, I think of that scene in the LOTR films where Gandalf goes down to Minas Tirith and gets escorted to a dusty chamber with lots of old scrolls.

Coyotemax
02-02-2010, 03:40 PM
Funny you should say that, that was my exact mental image of that portion of the site as well :P

I like going through the archived challenges, there's a lot of stuff in here that doesn't seem to see the light of day in the Finished Maps forum. And in cases like this, even though some people like Steel General aren't being overly prolific these days, you can definitely see why they have the reputation they do :)

I *love* this map. It's very inspiring, makes me want to work on another city map. I think the burnout from Rivercrossing/Cruzamento is almost dealt with!

arsheesh

Yes well, one thing studying philosophy has taught me is that often the best insights have a long and venerable history. To read modern scholars absent the works of Plato and Aristotle (and indeed other great ancient western and eastern thinkers) for instance is to consign one's self to a myopic view of the world. My guess is that there are many gems yet to be mined by us newbies collecting digital dust in the archival white tower of Minas Tirith.

Cheers,

-Arsheesh

SG makes wonderful maps....in way they're even better as objects trouvees (sorry no accent on the 'e') in the dusty Archives. In years to come when we're all dead an buried others will be unearthing SG's maps and saying the same thing....that's pretty cool!
