View Full Version : Lurker taking the plunge

02-15-2009, 06:12 AM
Greetings everyone.

I have been lurking on these forums for a few months being inspired by others work and gradually building up to a big project. I play an online RPG called The Dark Grimoire (http://www.darkgrimoire.com/) where i started off making grid maps for navigation but worked up to more artistic maps.

I use Fireworks and a little Paint Shop Pro, i did buy CC3 and had a play but decided good old drawing was more flexible for me. I have done a few maps i was fairly happy with right up until i saw Torstans Map of Dolmen Isle which totally blew me away.

I'm hoping with the advice and hints of the community here i can make a map of a similar style.

Welcome to the Guild!

I'm really glad you liked it! Welcome to the guild.

The best way to pick up is to start a thread with a WIP. As you ask questions, we'll do our best to answer them. If you have a specific question that you think someone here can answer, you can always send them a message (once you have posted 5 times to prove you are not a robot!).

Thanks for the welcome :)

This is the kind of map i was making to help people find there way around in the game:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/rokhall_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/RoKGuildHall-2.png)

My first mapping attempt handrawn, the icons where not done by me:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/valorn1_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/Valorn_Master.jpg)

After lots of rethinks i worked with same person again on some of the icons and came up with a more detailed section of the previous map:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/caernivale_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/Caernivale_Master.jpg)

Thanks for looking.

Again thank you for the kind words.

Here are some more maps to give you an idea of how much i can currently do although the maps on here have already given me new ideas since :)

As I said I did try Campaign Cartographer, I loved the ease of use but the maps just didn't 'feel' right to me. This the one I was most pleased with and shows the south west of the continent in more detail:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/dundee_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/Dundee_Master.jpg)

The second maps in the series of three (previous post) was 'drawn' with a mouse but I invested in a graphics tablet afterwards and focused on a Volcano island in the game:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/kilican_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/Kilican_Master.jpg)

Those maps where based on the game world which already exists. So far my only imagined world is a map of Kimald, a fictional continent close to the games continent of Valorn:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/thumbs/kimald_thb.jpg (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/gg0mjm/maps/Kimald_Master.jpg)

That just about completes my map portfolio pre joining the forum here. A quick question, should i start a new post in the Regional/World mapping section to work through the project I'm currently working on?

Ohh dear, thats the one from CC3 which i was trying not to use ;)

@ Torstan (or anyone who knows the answer) have you done any more mpas in a similar style to your Dolmen Isle and is there a way of searching maps made by a user?

Under the "Advanced Search" feature you can look for all threads started by a specific user.

Welcome Korba. I like your maps too. Excellent choice giving up lurking and jumping in. I think thats how many of us started here.

I did do one previously in that style, but it was for a commission where the person was less keen on having work up on the interent so it won't be seeing the light of day for a while. However RobA has a lovely example of a map like this:

and here:

And delgondahntelius has a few maps in a similar style. First there is this tutorial:

And this is one of the maps in that style:

I hope those help!

Thank you Torq and huge thank you Torstan those are exactly the kind of posts i was hoping for.

You're welcome. I'm glad they are useful. Remember to rep the people's whose threads you find useful (scales on the bottom left of a post). You'll have no trouble realising why RobA's got the most rep :)
