View Full Version : Lite Challenge Rules - Please Read.

It may be the case that many people do not enter the usual monthly challenge because they feel that they have little chance of winning. The Lite Mapping Challenge is here to address that. Generally we will reprise for contests our most popular usual mapping challenges, but this is subject to change as we see how the contest develops:

Rules Summary

If you have won our usual Monthly contest, won 3 Lite Mapping Challenges or if you have had a map chosen as our Cartographers' Choice map, then you cannot enter this competition.
The challenge runs from the 15th of each month to the 15th of the next.
If the contest is a 'Reprise' you cannot post the same map as you did in the original contest.

Why Take Part in the Lite Challenge?

Entering a mapping contest is a great way to improve your mapping.
Working to a deadline helps you to concentrate on finishing your map.
Advanced mappers (i.e. previous contest winners) are not allowed to take part - improving your chances to win.
Reprise contests are a great way to have a second bite of the cherry if you did not win the first time.

We hope that the Lite challenge will encourage those who would not enter the usual monthly competition to change their minds and throw their hats into the ring and take part in a friendly tourney.

The Cartographers Guild Lite Mapping Challenge is a monthly contest that will allow you the opportunity to exercise your mapping skills in order to win prestige amongst your fellow cartographers, the standard prize consists of a special rank that will appear under your name.

On or about the middle of each month a mapping topic or concept will be announced and entries must be received on or about 5 days before the middle of the month. Judging will take place during those last 5 days, and a winner will be announced within that time frame.

The following procedures must be followed in order to join the mapping challenge.

Restriction on Entrants: The Lite Challenge is open to non-award winners only. That means if you have won our usual monthly contest or have had a map featured on this site as a Cartographers' Choice map, then you cannot enter this competition. You may also not enter the competition if you have won the Lite Challenge contest 3 times. Winners of other other awards (e.g. tutorials, River Police etc are free to enter).
Restriction on Entries: Your map must be original. This means that if the contest is a 'reprise' contest and you took part in the original contest, you cannot repost your challenge entry from the original contest. One Entry per contestant. Your entry must be created no earlier than the date that the challenge is posted. You may not used previously drawn maps as your entry. This is to give all entrants the same amount of time in which to create their entries.
Entry deadline - Entries for each Challenge must be posted prior to the last five days of that particular Challenges month. The Lite challenge runs from the 15th of the month to the 10th of the next month with five days for voting.
Entry Posting Thread Subject - You must create a thread with the subject title formatted as follows (replacing May/June 2011 with the current month and year):

May/June 2011 Lite Challenge Entry: Entry title or description
Entry Posting Thread Contents - Your thread must have an attached image in the first post upon creation. You may post your thread early with a Work in Progress (WIP) picture, and work in progress pictures and updates are strongly encouraged but not required. Each map image you post must be preceded with the words: ### LATEST WIP ###. This means it will be be picked up by the thumbnail scraper.
Judging - Judging will be handled by public vote through the forums voting system during the last 5 days of the month.
Entry Creation - Entries must be submitted as an image attachment, but the image could be from any software, such as Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, Fractal Mapper, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, etc. to include scans of hand drawn paper maps if applicable. No matter what mapping method you use, you're still a cartographer in our eyes.
Legal Rules - You must follow copyright rules, and may not use any map resources that are copyrighted to the point of preventing you from posting them to the public. All submitted entries must be your own work. All posted content is the sole property of the poster and may not be reused without permission. By submitting an entry to the Mapping Challenge you automatically grant permission to the Cartographers Guild and other Fantaseum Alliance sites to have your entry featured on the site as a contest winner or used in inter- and cross-site promotions or contests.
Additional Rules - More rules may be added and the process may be streamlined as the concept evolves. These rules are subject to change at any time.

This challenge will not work without participation. Tell your friends, post to other forums, spread the word!

Upon completion of a monthly lite challenge, all entry threads will be locked, and the announcement will be unstickied and locked. This will prevent old entry's from cluttering up the forums.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss the rules of the challenge.

It feels odd to be posting in a thread that's nearly five years old, but I'd like to know if there's any restriction on the number of entries a single person can make in any given challenge.

01-05-2011, 10:40 PM
1 entry per person per challenge. You could do a different map for the normal challenge though...if it meets the criteria for that. You usually have 30 days so if you get a new idea halfway through, and decide that the new idea is better, then keep it in the current thread you have going.

Oops well picked up Reynard and Ascension, I've amended the rules to cover the position.

02-12-2011, 09:46 AM
This is a sort of stupid question, but what qualifies as a "lite" challenge? Is it memory limitations?

02-12-2011, 09:56 AM
Hi Hussar, there are two challenges, the normal one, just called 'the current mapping challenge' (which runs from the start to the end of each month) and the lite challenge, which runs from mid month to mid month. If you look at the challenge subforum, you'll see them listed separately. People who have won a 'normal challenge' are not allowed to participate in lite challenges, so that newer mappers won't be daunted from entering the lite challenge.

02-12-2011, 01:47 PM
Think of the Lite Challenge as being a beginner to intermediate level type thing and the Main Challenge as being for normal to god level type thing.

*steals Ascension's signature linking code and flees to use it in his own sig file*

06-09-2011, 05:13 PM
I think RobA posted a thread somewhere about how to make your own sig-links like many of us have. It's a few years old so it might require some digging.

The challenge runs from the 15th of each month to the 15th of the next.

Is this rule still valid - so the challenge entries will be locked and voting starts on the 10th?

08-08-2011, 12:59 AM
It's not a hard and fast rule, it's more of a guideline. We try to get things done on time but sometimes we're all busy and it slips.

08-08-2011, 03:24 AM
all the time I've been in the light challenge it has ended on the 15th with voting going to the 20th aprox.

06-11-2012, 02:31 PM
Sorry in advance if the question sounds silly, but can I still use a map I enter into the Challenge in a commercial product? Maybe even before the time for the challange runs out (if I get it done in time)? Rules at first glance don't seem to say anything against it, still wan't to ask before going ahead.

06-11-2012, 05:03 PM
The official answer will probably be the same, but my unofficial understanding is that all of your artwork, WAS, IS and SHALL REMAIN your property to do with as you please ... so yes, you can publish your artwork. (the only contest related issue is that it must be started and finished during the contest period ... so an earlier work in progress nearing completion is ineligible for the contest).

06-11-2012, 06:12 PM
Your maps remains your property in all cases, so you are free to use the map in a commercial project or however else you choose. However, if a publisher is buying the map for their product, they might require that it be taken down from the CG until the project is published. It's always worth checking that with the client before posting WIPs of commissioned work on here!

Gen, the dates aren't exact, just a guideline for when the mods try to start the challenges :)

The August/September challenge hasn't even been named yet; the July/August one is just wrapping up this coming week.

So, for the August/September one, you're early ;).

08-13-2012, 08:39 PM
Thank you, so, there is time! I wasn't sure, I'm kind of literal.
How will I know the challenge is open? Do I visit the page daily to know?
Thank you again for helping me understand...meanwhile, I will read the rules again.

08-13-2012, 08:59 PM

First thing that will happen is that the current July/August Challenge will close: all the map threads in this directory will be locked, and a new "poll" post will be created so that people can vote on their favorite map.

Then the poll will close, and a winner will be declared.

Then, when the mods get to it, all the threads in this forum (except for this one) will be moved to the "archive" forum, and a new post will be made announcing what the new challenge is.

There's no deadline for entering, until the threads are locked at the very end of the contest when voting begins.

As to exactly when the new challenge will be posted? If there's a better way than "checking every day", I haven't learned what it is yet :).

We've been trying to get more engaged in this this "social networking" think I keep hearing about :)

We should be posting content announcements on our FB (http://www.facebook.com/cartographersguild) G+ (https://plus.google.com/105175580560441203246) or twitter (http://twitter.com/CartoGuild/) but we kind of suck at it :(

Social networking? Which I understand means going to the club on a Friday and drinking gin slings on the terrace after a few rubbers of Bridge? :)

08-15-2012, 03:35 PM
Thanks a lot Guys!

Of course, a kind of announcing, example: ''Lite Challenge Open" in our own cartographer's mailbox, or in our personnal page somewhere would be awesome. When something opens for the members, we would receive a kind of personnal notice from admin, in some way you see fit.

Of course I dont have any problem looking regulary at all the pages, but it is easier to follow when advise. Same principle could be apply to treads. I am on a Excel forum and on the threads I post, each time someone answer, I receive a notice in my personnal mail. I like this because I dont have think all the time and then go to see if someone answered me. When you work on a project and you are anxious for comments, this can get obsessive!

Anyhow, I'll check from time to time, as everybody do. Not a problem and thanks again! ;)

Hi Gen, if you go into your settings on this bbs you can have emails sent to you whenever there is activity on the forum or a particular thread, I think.

That's good, that's very good!
Will do, thanks :)

Is it unfair if I would like to take part in a lite challenge, becoused of the feature map scroll?

09-10-2012, 02:48 PM
Hi Schwarzkreuz. I'm sorry if you have got a featured scroll it means you can't do the light challenge. But you can (and should) do the regular challenge!

09-10-2012, 03:34 PM
This I understand, I only sometimes prefer the light-theme.

Cunning Cartographer
09-10-2012, 04:51 PM
Well you can still do them if you get inspiration from the lite theme, just put it into your own personal portfolio and demonstrate it as a Finished Map instead of a lite Challenge entry :) (pretty much what I'm doing with the last lite challenge, though mine was more of a case of not having time to finish it).

01-08-2013, 07:24 PM
any word on when the next lite challenge starts?

01-08-2013, 07:52 PM
any word on when the next lite challenge starts?

Patience, grasshopper :P

We are a bit resources strapped at the moment, especially as the holidays are just wrapping up for some folks... But the industrious elves behind the scenes are busy working on a challenge, don't fret!

-Rob A>

01-09-2013, 12:44 AM
We should be getting a new one started around the 15th of the month. It's not the first time we've skipped around the holidays. It just happens sometimes if everyone is busy.

01-15-2014, 02:17 PM
I'd just like to check that the judging criteria, and the 3 vote thing is the same as the regular challenge?

01-15-2014, 02:23 PM
We've actually been letting people vote for as many entries as they'd like for the last few months to see how that works. As far as judging... that's ultimately up to you as a voter. We provide guidelines and 'rules' for each particular challenge, but not everyone's esthetic is the same, and voting comes down in the end to a mix of what you like and how closely you think the entry sticks to the original brief. But again, that's your call.

01-15-2014, 02:27 PM
Thank you, that clarified very nicely. :)

01-25-2014, 07:07 AM
Another question, re: the rules...

I'm finding it very hard to get my colors to blend properly doing this *digitally*... but I have found that combining certain textures gives the effect/appearance I want.

Would a piece that relies heavily on these textures/patterns still be "original work" in terms of the challenge?

- Max -
01-25-2014, 08:00 AM
Would be, since you're working on some original piece for the challenge that you haven't worked before it.

01-25-2014, 08:10 AM
Okay... just didn't know if textures/patterns were like... cheating :P (I mean, I'm not just pasting them on there, it's a lot of work, but I want to be fair!)

06-15-2014, 05:25 PM
Is there any rules about moving an entry to one of the WIP forums after the challenge closes?

Edit: Of course I meant are there any rules...

I think it would be fine Meshon :)
