my name is Eric, and i'm a very new to fantasy cartography. i have a few ties to mapmaking, through my step-mom who used to co-own a cartography business. also, from the fantasy side, i have been playing dungeons and dragons since fifth grade, and have been drawing maps for fun for even longer. ive never been very good at any form of drawing, but when i stumbled onto this site, i decided to give it a try. I've downloaded GIMP as suggested (though i still have no idea how to work it). i am an avid reader of fantasy novels, from a "song of ice and fire" to "wheel of time" to the various David Eddings series, and of course, Tolkein in all his splendor. one of my favorite parts in each are the detailed maps (i love my copy of the atlas of middle-earth).

well, thats about all i have to introduce.

If you have downloaded Gimp, then the best way imoho, is to look at RobA's tut on creating a regional map. It is a large one, but it teaches you soooooo much about Gimp and its abilities. Run through that one and a few others then post the results and people will let you know what they think may improve it. After a while, you will be creatingmaps in styles that you like.

Have fun and post maps as often as you can :)
