I have created this thread as a vehicle to use to readily make available any and all tutorials here that have been packaged in a PDF format. This first post will contain links to PDF tutorials written exclusively for GIMP or Photoshop:

EDIT: Post #1's tutorial links have all been updated and now point to the appropriate tutorial.

Thank you all for your great comments as well as your permissions to "PDFize" your tutorials. I will be working on these documents on an on-going basis.

NeonKnight and RobA, I've taken your suggestions and incorporated them into the first post. I believe it is now much more "user friendly".

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hello, All.

Thank you , NeonKnight, for stickying this thread. I really appreciate your doing so.

I want everyone to know that I haven't forgotten my "mission", rather, my on-line time have been rather curtailed. I work as a government contractor at the North Carolina National Guard and the UIS DoD has put a policy in place that limits you to one hour of Internet time per day to sites that are on a n approved list. Cartographers' Guild is not on the list.

Consequently, the onlhy time I can visit the site is in the evenings and weekends when there are a million other things pulling at my available time. I shall continue PDFing tutorials so, never fear, you that have tutorials waiting shall have them eventually PDFed.

Regards,

Gary

Well, i would like to join to this initiative, i already did one conversion without knowing it existed a post about it already.

I did a PDF version of jfrazierjr "Explanation of Layer Masks in GIMP(and PS)"

Im gonna add the file here, so you can leave your comment about the format and stuff. I would like to know if i can use the logos of the community, it would be great if we can have all those tutorials on one format and with the Cartographers logo on it.

(Maybe we can do a concentrated tome latter XD)

Hello, All.

Well, after a V - E - R - Y long hiatus due to a variety of health-related, work-related and life-related issues, I've made my way back to The Carotographer's Guild. I've missed y'all and ceratinly hope all has been well with you.

I thought it only fitting that I "announce" my return by posting another PDF tutorial. In the first post of this thread, you'll find a new link in the Photoshop Tutorials section (at the end of the post). Available there is pyrandon's "A medieval town map in Photoshop" tutorial now offered as a "take-away" PDF document.

A question of help -- I've either completely forgotten how to attach a file as a URL link or the way to attach files has changed? I could only figure out to attach it "IN-LINE" which makes the PDF document a clickable thumbnail. Can attachments still be attached as a URL link? I sure like some help on this question, thanks.!

Looking forward to chatting with everyone again.

Regards,

Gary (Vandy)

Hey Vandy!

It's great to see you back with us. As for the attachment system, it has changed some with the forum upgrade. I'm not 100 percent sure about non-image attachments, but you should be able to attach files via the "Insert Attachment" button in the upload window. As I understand it, the "In-line" button serves in the same way as linking to a thumbnail image in user galleries not so long ago. Then again, I could be 100 percent wrong about all of that, but I'm sure that someone (maybe Arcana or RobA) will be along shortly to clarify the issue.

And again, Welcome Back!

If you click on the "Go Advanced" button and use "Manage Attachments", it gives you two options; "Insert Attchments" or "Insert Inline"

I've linked the Realistic Land / Mountain Texture Made Easy (http://www.cartographersguild.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30565&d=1288493649) tutorial in the Photoshop section in the second post on Page 1 of this thread.

Enjoy.

Hi, All.

A question for you. I have been continuing to create, repackage and link tutorials to Post 1 and Post 2 of Page 1 in this thread BUT...

... I haven't been posting these new links in THIS thread. Rather, I've been posting the announcement in the thread from which the tutorial origniated.

Would you prefer I continue as in the second paragraph or, would you prefer I post the announcement in this thread as well?

Thanks.

Regards,

Vandy

I would say if you can do both (and if it's not a huge pain in the neck) then you should

Hey there Vandy. I thought I'd pop in to let you know about a couple of new GIMP pdf tutorials:

Candicis' Antique-Style Maps in GIMP (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?15011-Antique-Style-Maps-in-Gimp) tutorial (based on Ascension's tut)
My own tutorials: Making Map Borders in GIMP (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?15037-Making-Map-Borders-in-GIMP), Eriond - A Tutorial for GIMP and Wilbur (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?18280-Eriond-A-Tutorial-for-GIMP-amp-Wilbur&p=182614#post182614) and Turning Maps into Globes in GIMP (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?16140-Turning-Maps-into-Globes-in-GIMP).

Hello everybody.

Looks like my english ist too bad (I'm German), because I'm working with Giide's "Ascension's Atlas Tutorial in GIMP" (http://www.cartographersguild.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30650&d=1288649425) and have some problems there.

On Site 2 stands:

k. Switch to the Channels dialog (if you don't see it, you can make it appear by using the Windows Dockable Dialogs menu option. At the bottom of the channels dialog, click the new channel icon. Name
the new channel Coastline, and check the box for Initialize from Selection.

I don't understand what "... and check the box for Initialize from Selection." means. Which box must I checked in Gimp 2.6? I can't find any checkbox with the Name "Initialize from Selection" or anything like that (or a german counterpart).

Please don't let me walk in the dark.

Cincerely,

Chazsmyr

Hey there! I found this (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?15185-Inkscape-Mapping-Basics&highlight=inkscape) tutorial by Hai-Etlik for inkscape already in pdf format and noticed it wasn't already in the index on here. Hopefully this helps in some way. I'm currently going through it (I decided to use inkscape) and I've found it to be pretty helpful. :D

Just an FYI, since Vandy hasn't been around recently and there are tons of great tutorials in PDF format that were not listed, I've just updated and expanded this thread to include them. Hopefully this will make this thread more useful for new members. I've searched up to 12 pages into the Tutorials archives so anything older than that hasn't been included. So if you see anything else that should be included please post a message and I'll add it to the list.

Cheers,

Is there any GIMP tutorial that is completely for beginners? I have practically no clue in using it, and the tutorials have "Basic knowledge is expected from readers" tagged in it.

I think the Gimp website is a good place to start : http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Most of the turorials here are there to help making maps not to exlain how the software works.:|

True, but some many of the tutorials are a good place to start, even if you're unfamiliar with GIMP. I know many who have said as much regarding RobA's Creating coastlines in GIMP.

I am currently writing a series of map tutorials guides using techniques common to many graphics applications. While there is a chapter at the beginning that covers the basic steps used in all the tutorials explained for using GIMP, Photoshop, Inkscape and Xara Photo & Graphic Designer 9, the tutorials themselves only mention which basic step is being used and how to apply it to a particular step, and not really referring to specific applications. That series is called 25 Quick & Dirty Map Tutorials Guides, which there are 4 books by me, and one by Schwarzkreuz. My first four books are: 25 Quick & Dirty Map Tutorials Guide, 25 Advanced Quick & Dirty Map Tutorials Guide, Hand-Drawn Map Tutorials Guide, and the Using 3D Elements in Map Tutorials Guide. The fifth book by Schwarzkreuz is specifically for GIMP and Photoshop, though I don't know what is covered. Those books will be available as printed manuals and PDF files and not scheduled for release until August 2014 - though some material may be released before that.

Edit: here's a link to that successful (not running anymore) Kickstarter that funded this project: 25 Quick & Dirty Map Tutorials KS (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/615795674/25-quick-and-dirty-map-tutorials-guide-book)

Here's a link to my G+ community that supports the project: 25 Quick & Dirty Map Tutoirals Guide community (https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/109383565847958043404)

Hey guys,

A lot of the links are 404ing. Just thought you should be aware.

Looks like the URLs for stuff has changed (probably after a forum upgrade) rather than it being a case of the tutorials not being there. They'll all need revising I imagine.

So... some links are still 404ing. Anyone has any idea on the ETA to get that fixed? Are those tutorials lost forever? I would really like to download some of the gimp-related ones.

The tutorials are all available if you click on the Original tutorial links.

tried two approaches to the fast & easy GIMP... the PDF link goes to a 404 page, the 'original' goes to a thread that points here... :(

jjhil, are you clicking on the Original Tutorial link? It works for me, and the PDF file is downloadable in the first thread comment. This is the direct link:

Hi, Y'all!

Yes, I'm still alive and kicking. Robbie contacted me and explained that most of the tutorial links in this thread were broken and would I be willing to reattach tutorials to them and fix the links.

Well, the good news is I still have all the tutorials to fix the links and will be doing so over the next two to three weeks.

Keep an eye on this thread as well as try a link now and then for my progress in getting this corrected.

Have a great week!

Regards,

Vandy

Hi, All.

Just a quick update for you. All of the tutorial links in Post #1 (GIMP and Photoshop Tutorials) (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=4987&p=56613&viewfull=1#post56613) are now fixed and point to the appropriate tutorial. I'll continue to work on getting the links in Post #2 updated.

Enjoy!

Hello, All my Dear Cartographers.

All of the tutorial links in Post #1 and Post #2 on Page 1 of this thread now point to the correct tutorial.

I will continue to search and find new tutorials to add to this thread. If anyone has a suggestion or a tutorial you'd like me to include here, just let me know.

Enjoy, All!

Regional map, coastlines, mountains, forest, town .... all that is wonderfull and all these tutos are really well done !
But it seems to me that some are ... forgotten ? not already writen ?
The closer maps ! (To use as battlemaps in RPG)
-> Details for one street, with different houses and shops
-> Details for docks, with ropes and other stuff for fishing and shipping
-> How to build and furnish interiors (home, shop, Inn, ... and so on ... )

Thank you !
