The Cartographers Guild Mapping Challenge is a monthly contest that will allow you the opportunity to exercise your mapping skills in order to win prestige amongst your fellow cartographers. Occasionally, special additional prizes may be offered, but the standard prize consists of a special rank that will appear under your name.

Each month a mapping topic or concept will be announced and entries must be received 5 days before the end of the month. Judging will take place during those last 5 days, and a winner will be announced within that time frame.

The following procedures must be followed in order to join the mapping challenge.

Entry deadline - Entries for each Challenge must be posted prior to the last five days of that particular Challenges month.
Entry Posting Thread Subject - You must create a thread with the subject title formatted as follows (replacing May with the current month and year): May 2011 Entry: Entry title or description
Entry Posting Thread Contents - Your thread must have an attached image in the first post upon creation. You may post your thread early with a Work in Progress (WIP) picture, and work in progress pictures and updates are strongly encouraged but not required.
Each map image you post must be preceded with the words: ### LATEST WIP ###. This means it will be be picked up by the thumbnail scraper.
Judging - Judging will be handled by public vote through the forums voting system during the last 5 days of the month.
Judging Criteria - Entries will be judged based on the following criteria in no specific order: originality, artistic merit, adherence to challenge guidelines, technical excellence.
Entry Creation - Entries must be submitted as an image attachment, but the image could be from any software, such as Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, Fractal Mapper, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, etc. to include scans of hand drawn paper maps if applicable. No matter what mapping method you use, you're still a cartographer in our eyes.
Legal Rules - You must follow copyright rules, and may not use any map resources that are copyrighted to the point of preventing you from posting them to the public. All submitted entries must be your own work. All posted content is the sole property of the poster and may not be reused without permission. By submitting an entry to the Mapping Challenge you automatically grant permission to the Cartographers Guild and other Fantaseum Alliance sites to have your entry featured on the site as a contest winner or used in inter- and cross-site promotions or contests.
Original work - The map must be made within the time frame of the challenge. Therefor it is not allowed to use a previously made map or continue work on a map begun before the challenge commenced. This to make sure that all have the same chances in the competition.
Additional Rules - More rules may be added and the process may be streamlined as the concept evolves.
This challenge will not work without participation. Tell your friends, post to other forums, spread the word!

Upon completion of a monthly challenge, all entry threads will be locked, and the announcement will be unstickied and locked. This will prevent old entry's from cluttering up the forums.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss the rules of the challenge.

Please make sure you guys are reading the contest rules. EVERY month I have to rename the thread titles. Not trying to be a stickler, but no one seems to get it right so I figured a little tickler would be appropriate.

Hey that rhymes. Not to be a stickler, but here's a little tickler...remember to properly name your threads or the river police will chop off your heads.

I have a question. I see many people posting maps for the challenges and then they continue to modify and tweak those maps as they go.

I have a map that I want to eventually submit but I am not done working on it. I seem to adjust things daily. :P

Are we allowed to do that? Upload our map challenge and then continue working on it? I just want to make sure before I upload anything. My guess is that you will take the most recent version uploaded on that 5th last day of the month - that will be the map that is officially entered into the contest. Correct?

You can keep adding to the thread until your happy or when a cut off point comes which is about 4 days before the end of the month - best to finish off a little before then tho.

Whenever you put a new map in put ### Latest WIP ### just before you upload the map as an image attachment and then it should appear on the
thumbnails page (www.viewing.ltd.uk/Temp/CG/ChallengeTN/Challengers_May08.htm) of all current entries.

We normally like to wait until the voting closes the previous month but the revote messed us up a bit.

can one person do more then one entry?

Not that I really have that kind of spare time or anything, but you see I had an idea for a solar system chart that I will be getting my supplies to work on this weekend, but then with some of the other things mentioned in the challenge post and some thoughts posted by others I'm coming up with other ideas now.

Just wanted to remind people of the Legal section of the above rules. There may very well be some cross-site promotional useage of challenge entries in the near future. Entering this contest automatically grants consent for the guild to use your images for promotional material and cross-site awareness.

Back in the early days, lots of people voted for themselves - all members get to vote on the challenge whether they are participants or not.

Now a days, its pretty rare for someone to vote for themselves, except the newbies who don't get it. These days we do multi-voting, that is you get 1 vote for every 5 participants. Since we had a couple drop-outs this month it may be only 18 participants, so that would give each voter 3 votes. Multi-voting also posts who votes for whom. Because of this, most don't vote for themselves - everyone gets to see whether they do this or not.

Its not against the rules to vote for yourself, but as a practice most consider this a bit tacky. There are enough voters, usually, so that the fact you don't vote for yourself, won't affect voting, as the best maps always gets the most votes.

In other words, voting is seldom very close - the winner usually has a large margin ahead of second place. Though that's not always true. Last month we had a tie for first place (and I will print more than one map, if there is a tie again, this month!)

Hoel, I'd say, don't vote for yourself - vote for your favorite 3 beyond yourself and if the community thinks you should win - you will.

You are welcome to vote for your own if you want. We've never restricted the voting in anyway. Just be aware that voting is public so if you feel guilty about voting for yourself you may not want to, but for the record I would vote myself if I entered. ;)

How "from scratch" is a challenge entry supposed to be? I ask because if/when I submit an entry, it would make a lot of sense for me to take the oppotunity to add detail to a world I am already working on, and it likely has at least basic maps existing.

I think that has to be a judgment call from you, bartmoss. After all we are never going to know if a hitherto unposted map had been worked up in advance of a contest - although we may suspect ;)

I guess a good rule of thumb might be that if you have sketched out general ideas, world building etc, then that shouldn't count as working up the map (unless the contest is specifically about world building). It's probably best to explain in your initial post how much previous work you have done if you're not sure.

I seem to upload my WIP a lot.

Do all these WIPs, at least the larger files, get deleted once the contest is over? Unless we just have lots of disk space in which case I won't worry about it.

I don't want to be a resource hog and would like to know how conscientious I need to be.

I upload lots of WIP maps myself - and No they aren't deleted afterwards. Don't worry about being a resource hog - those WIP maps you upload make for great teaching tools for people reviewing your thread, especially if comments are made by others on how to improve your map. Your updated WIPs show the progress in following the given critiques - and in a "kind of sort of" way acts as a tutorial for others to review and learn.

So don't worry about uploading lots of WIP maps - it only helps others in the long run. I do it all the time.

Don't like commiting threadomancy but I have a question.

In the Lite Challenge rules it says you can't participate if you've won a Current Challenge Compass. What if you were already participating in the Lite Challenge and won the Current Challenge before the Lite Challenge ended, would your entry be removed from the running or would you still be allowed to compete for that one Lite Challenge and barred from future Lite Challenges as normal?

I think you'd probably slide in the qualification, as in your case, you won the regular challenge before the Lite challenge was complete and voted on. But in normal cases no, once you win a normal challenge, you are disqualified from participation in the Lite Challenge. I think you're OK though.

I'm a bit confused as to some of the rules for these monthly challenges:

Are we allowed to enter in maps that we have already made (and displayed on this site) if they are applicable, or does the map have to be something the guild hasn't seen before?
I'm also confused about the ###Latest WIP### thing. Is that a requirement, or a suggestion, or what is it about? I'm seeing some entries have it, and others not, and in different places.

Technically your map should have been started on or about the start of the challenge which was the first few days of the month. Even if you started the map as intended for something other than the challenge and displayed it here - its OK to use in the challenge. If you started the map last month then it doesn't qualify.

### Latest WIP ### is for the thumbnail scraper (which hasn't worked the last month or so), but a script to capture the latest map image is posted on Latest WIP page containing thumbnails of all the entries. You place that bit of code at the end of your post, before you post the thumbnail image of your map.

So that means Cad Goleor is off the menu, as I started that (and posted the initial sketch) in April. I might be able to do a zoomed in map though, or my Annwn map I've started working on. I'll see if I can come up with something. I would like to compete. Thanks Gamerprinter!

The main reason we set limits on the challenges is to get folks accustomed to working to a deadline. If you never intend to try to make money off your maps then, cool, challenges are there to just be fun for you or experiment with new things. If you do hope to take on commissions in the future, you will have to get used to deadlines and other parameters set forth by the client. So for that reason we say, no old maps - just brand new ones. Of course if you have an old map that fits the criteria and you wait until like the last few days to post it then we might get suspicious but there's no way to prove anything so it might slide by. That's one of the reasons why folks post updates along the way - to show how the progress is going. The tag grabs the very last image in the thread to use for the thumbnail compiler that we use to post up all of the images for voting (well more specifically the very first image after the very last tag). Folks often forget their tags or do them wrong or forget to title them properly or put them in the wrong subforum so we CLs go in and fix them up when we see them.

Umm... it means whenever one of the CL gets around to it, which once in a while might even be the following day unfortunately(sometimes we CL's are just busy... or slack....) ie, for best results, assume that you should be completed 1-2 days prior to the deadline to be safe... and then if you have any small, quick last minute tweaks to make that you can edit and post before the CL manages to lock the threads.

normally when I set a date, I close the contest the day after, sometimes early in the day (and I'm in CET+1) sometimes late depending on how busy I am.

As JF said, we can't tell you for sure. It just depends when a CL gets around to doing it. If you want to be super safe, then do it at the earliest possible date you have calculated that the challenge might close.

Hi, there its timezone +1 Here in Germany, but there is still somewhere on planet earth a person who have +11 more hours than I to stay on 29th Feb, can I used those timeline for my entry? Its still somewhere on Earth 29. Feb so I guess.

The challenges are not automated and on a clock, one of the CLs closes it when he has the time for it. So most times the challenge runs a few hours or even days longer than announced. Yet you should not count on it. It is possible that it is closed on the day mentioned as final day. So it is a good idea to upload some final WIP a day or two before the challenge is officially done...

I'm in GMT+1 as well, and when I'm closing a challenge I usually do it the morning after the day announced to give everyone maximum time to finish. But as EP says - its up to the individual and sometimes you have a conflicting scedule that pushes your hand :)

Old thread, but I guess it's the place to ask .... when does each new challenge start? The official (first of the month to the last 5 days) statement doesn't seem to be applying this month. Is it just whenever the right person finds time to post one? Will it still end at the end of the current month, or does it always get 4 weeks?

It usually runs to the end of the month so as not to interfere with the next month. It should be started by one of the CL's, but no one has jumped in this time. I have been alternating running the Lite Challenges with Diamond, but if no one starts a new one by tonight I will get it going.
