View Full Version : Help us with the Cartographers Choice! - Rate Maps!

05-15-2009, 10:27 AM
Well, we've been utilizing the Thread Rating function to pretty good success over at the Tutorials forum, and its helped prompt more and more tutorial development which is a HUGE draw to the site.

This thread rating system is actually quite helpful for other reasons as well...For example, as of now, the community leaders keep an eye on the Finished Maps forum and choose maps to feature based on their own personal opinions. But you, the guild members, can help "influence" their decisions by rating Finished Maps threads in this forum the same way we do over at the Tutorials forum.

Just click on a thread, and up at the top portion of the thread right there to the right of the original post of the thread is a Rate Thread menu. Click it, and be honest in your ratings. Don't just go around throwing 5's around. I'd like to see all the finished maps get rated.

What a great idea!!!

Just when I thought that I was gonna have a night to sit back and play some Sacred...why have I never thought of rating finished maps? Looks like gaming will have to wait another night or two. I won't be rating my own maps but I'll try to get all of the others done this weekend.

05-16-2009, 01:05 AM
In other news...any thread in any of our forums can be rated...this caan be used to just specify which threads are "successful" lol

05-16-2009, 06:38 AM
I gave this thread 5 of 5 compasses :D

05-18-2009, 05:05 PM
So how come the index of the Finished Maps isn't showing the ratings like the Tutorials index does? Is this still in the works?

05-18-2009, 07:04 PM
There's a minimum of votes that are needed before a rating shows. I think it's 5 but it might be larger. So chip in on the threads and the ratings should show up soon enough.

05-18-2009, 07:35 PM
I think it's 10 now.

09-24-2009, 04:58 AM
Is it possible or allowed to post finished maps from a challenge thread in the Finished Maps thread, too?
I hope that's not the wrong thread to ask this question.

09-24-2009, 10:36 AM
I don't see why it would be a problem, but I woudl wait til the challenge is over and voting is complete before doing so.

What ever happened with rating finished maps and threads?

Thanks. Then I will proceed as proposed.

I still do that (rate threads) when I see one I like.

Thanks Karro...I wish more people would.

Thanks Karro...I wish more people would.

To clarify, I do that primarily in the Finished Maps area, since we were asked to. I have no problem letting it be known that I think a map I see is worthy of Mod's Choice, since there's so many awesome maps posted here :D

Just follow the sticky in the finished map forum...That way if it is selected as a feature map all the info should be in your post!

Thanks Karro...I wish more people would.

I'll admit, I'm really bad about rating threads. :(

11-05-2009, 06:33 PM
It would certainly help me, and probably help some others, if I could see which maps I had rated already. As it stands, I'm never sure if I've rated one or not, and it will let me rate it as many times as I want. Am I doing something wrong or just dumb as a rock?

11-05-2009, 06:36 PM
/agree with immolate. At one point I know I went through and rated everything, but I have no idea where I left off.

11-05-2009, 06:53 PM
Also, is there a reason I can't see ratings on any of these finished maps, even ones I know have been promoted? Not a one...

11-05-2009, 07:39 PM
I second this.
I also tried to help by rating threads, but the lack of any indication that you have done so is a bit discouraging.

Thread rating is currently scaled for the tutorials forum...they don't show up until 10 people have rated it. This was decided because most tutorials were either not rated or rated 5...so we figured 10 five star ratings would qualify for a tutorial award.

This may have to change for this purpose, but we have to find a nice balance. I can't set the ratings on a per-forum basis.

I just changed it so you cannot re-rate threads that you've already rated (no changing of ratings) lets see if that makes it easier to tell whether you've rated or not.

But be honest with ratings...they are private I think...and don't follow the 5 or nothing rule, or this system will never work. Make it a habit to rate a finished map and if everyone does this, after a few, the ratings will show up.

I'm definitely open to suggestions though.

I really appreciate all the hard work you do on this forum. This is the best community on the internet that I've seen, and I've been here since gopher was the coolest thing going.

I tried rating the first ten maps from the top, and what I found was that about half of them said I'd already rated them. I haven't rated a map since this conversation began, and I haven't seen any of the maps that I tried to rate, so I'm pretty sure this is an error.

A good example is the thread " Kingdom of Earlsdale - v3.0". I haven't even been on the finished maps forum in a couple of weeks and the thread says that's I've already rated the map.

Thanks again!

Immolate, thanks much! I just set it back...must be a bug...Hopefully there will be something different in todays big upgrade.

Just a friendly reminder from your community leaders, please rate threads in the Finished Map Gallery!!!! We would rather you rate a map a 1 vs not at all... granted, we hope you will find many you like and rate most higher, but please rate the threads.....

For those of you who may not know how to apply a rating, I created a quick sample screenshot. The Rating menu is at the top of the thread above the first post.

Note that while you may not see any visible effect that the rating has been performed, rest assured that it will be stored. Of the top of my head I am not sure of the exact numbers but usually the rating will only show up after a thread has been rated by a specific number of people.. so for example, the rating may only show up in the forum search results list after it has been rated by 10 people(as an example).

Also, please take the time to go back and rate older posts. There is some incredible work in the Finished Maps forum!

EDIT: please also remember to rate any tutorials you read....

Thanks for the reminder Jfraz. I have been rating tutorials all along but I didn't realize that it was important for finished maps. So, does a decent amount of 5 star ratings somehow figure into the community leaders selection of featured maps?

Yes, it is important, and thanks for at least rating the tutorials! Now get busy going through 4 years of finished maps, heh....

So, does a decent amount of 5 star ratings somehow figure into the community leaders selection of featured maps?

ummm.... yea.... it does... well.. that's the theory at least... As a group, we have been kind of slow to do featured maps over the past 1-2 years and the original idea behind using the ratings was to help us CL's pick the best of the best. While any of the community leaders has the option to feature any map they deem worthy, there are so many excellent maps AND we CL's get busy with stuff to the point that it's hard to choose one from a huge field of contenders.... so the ratings will help, especially if everyone rates honestly instead of just giving some threads a 5 and just not rating any that they don't like(I have been guilty of this in the past....)

10-16-2011, 08:05 AM
Agreed. This is great idea!

02-22-2012, 09:53 AM
Reminder...again...Rate these maps! I'm going to look in to some changes to the thread rating system in order to promote this. We should be rating maps, tutorials, and threads in general...The thread rating system is good for more than just letting the CL's know what needs to be featured, but it's also good for letting new and returning users know where the good content is.

I haven't gone through the Finished Maps section, but will do so. I just went through and rated every thread I had ever subscribed to, either Good or Excellent. On the assumption that I wouldn't have subscribed if it wasn't interesting or useful. ;)

The voting system can get the highest ranked thread with the most votes. It can also make a threshold with something like the then 5-star votes.

07-24-2015, 11:03 PM
You guys need to define what the rating system means and what the different ranks mean. Without this it is completely subjective and I think most people will rank a map 4 or 5 as general compliment. I wouldn't be surprised if most ratings hover around there. No one really wants to hurt another person's feelings.

Ideally, most maps should rank as 3 stars. With a slight renaming of the ranks to reflect a more technical viewpoint and a description of what each rank means, I think this would be a more useful tool for community feedback.

Here is my example:

This map excels in all aspects of map making: symbolism, functionality, typography, and composition. It is the sort of map you'd want as a high quality printed hanging on a wall at home, and something you return to often just to look at for fun. This sort of map we all strive to make, and usually fail at. This is the sort of map that renowned artists are commissioned to make for fantasy media. It is a unique work of art and make us all a little envious. Needless to say, this should be a very rare rating.

The map not only fits the style of map the artist strove for, but also has notable features impressive enough that viewers want to make a critical remark about them. These are the sort of maps that push the boundaries and add new ideas to the community. Other artists will want to incorporate these notable element into their own maps. People that get these ranks should write tutorials.

The map matches the style the cartographer intended. It is a competent piece of work and complies with the standards promoted on this website. This is the most common rank given to maps. Getting this rank on your map means you've proven you know what you are doing.

Needs Work
The map feels incomplete or has features that have been poorly done and should be reworked. It doesn't mean the map is unsalvageable, just that it was premature of the poster to call the map 'finished.' If a map gets this rank, the artist should feel inclined to read the critical responses and continue work on the map and resubmit it at a later date.

The submission fails to meet the minimum criteria of what defines a map. This rank should be assigned rarely and is mostly reserved for material that shouldn't be posted on this forum.

The number of threads with a rating is probably below 1%. It's 0.2% in this section: http://www.cartographersguild.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38&pp=20&sort=voteavg&order=desc&daysprune=-1
The tutorial section fares much better with 20% (still very low) but that's not representative.

Using a ranking system would be good but so far, it has rarely been used.

07-25-2015, 12:11 AM
The rating may not be used as it just not a feature people want, or it could be the for the reasons I stated: its nebulous nature and the impression that ranking something 3 or less stars in insulting is preventing a wider adoption.

I can't seem to see any way to rate or even vote on the tapatalk app version of the forum. I don't know how many people are in the same situation, but it's at least a factor
