View Full Version : July Entry: On Nemo's Back

On Nemo's Back - is a map of a small kingdom on the back of a swimming giant turtle.

I decided to participate on the monthly challenge again. With a theme almost similar on the one I posted on the competition last month. But as my original idea for a map proved to be a huge load of work, I decided to go on with this one. So this isn't yet the final map, maybe more like a concept image at this stage. I'll be adding castles, roads and maybe some settlement to the island, with labels etc.

Here's hoping it doesn't decide to take a dive, eh? :P

Yeah, maybe that's part of the "enchanted" thing here :)

Neat idea...

07-16-2009, 07:11 AM
Yeah, but the idea doesn't count if I can't pull it through well enough. :S

This looks like a great start and a great idea. Hell it's really good just as it sits without a village on it

Started tweaking the forest.. added some towers that I did with 3dmax. Still missing the roads, other buildings..

It seems very dark now, I'm having a bit of a hard time seeing any of the detail.

But that may just be me.

Very inspiring... it kinda reminds me of Discworld :)

Steel General, yeah.. I'll fix that later. :) The lighting has been giving me headaches.. aswell as the city I'm planning to have there. thanks for the input!

Gandwarf, I didn't even remember that one :D True!

That is coming together pretty swimmingly... I crack myself up

Started planning/modeling the city walls etc. Just a glimpse, low-res image.

Looks great, I have to say...I wish I could afford the 3dsMax / Vue, but those are just so darn expensive.

07-21-2009, 07:53 AM
Well, you have had very good results with photoshop, which also comes with a nice price tag :)

It's probably not yet ready. But decided to post anyway. Will add some things later.

Since bow and stern are architectural terms for the front and back parts of a boat, fore and aft towers might make more sense and still be nautical. My two cents.

Nicely done Jykke...

Ok, thanks for the input.

I work for the US Navy as a contractor and sometimes I like to ask the sailors about whether the anchor comes out of the pointy end of the boat or the blunt end. Of course, I work for sailors that are living in the desert so they aren't all there anymore...

07-22-2009, 04:29 AM
yep. Created a compass and added it to the map.. also tweaked the frames.

Jykke, that is awesome, to an unbelievable level.

It looks totally photorealistic, like an actual aerial shot of an island on a giant tortoise's back. Mucho Kudos to you.

Thanks Karro for the positive comment :) It sure did take some hours to construct. What I would like to do is a map on a even bigger scale with this technique, but it's quite tricky to get things just the way I want. Maybe with time and practice I can produce even more photorealistic maps, that's my goal.

seconded. the trees are stunning as is the underwater view of the flippers and head...beautiful work.

Voting is getting harder and harder in these contests...
This map is surely a stunner... but it's not the only stunning entry. Ack!

I know I am gonna vote for this one, no questions asked.

While I only dabble in the 3D medium, I know that the amount of work that went into this one is overwhelming.

On top of that, it looks awesome.

Well done Jykke. Great map. I would rep you, but I'm a noob, so I can't. :(

I think you can but it is a +1 repping stick to start with.

I was almost going to leave the map as it was, but thanks to Karro's comment on another thread, I decided to finish the fort map and add it to the current work. So here it is. Oh, and I did add also some other things aswell, if you notice.

As this map is "finished", atleast for the moment, I hope I did some improvement compared to my previous Challenge map, and this time my work could be called a map (of some sort). :)

As Gandwarf said, It's going to be a tough challenge, as for example Tear's work looks really good, not to forget the other works that have been posted sofar.
