My weekly DnD campaign rolls along, and last week I got a little more prep time than usual - granting me the opportunity to tweak the week's dungeon map a little more than I normally would. And by tweak I mean of course throwing handfuls of Photoshop Filters at it to see what stuck.
I like some of the effects I got with beveling and noise, though it seems to me it might be a little overwrought. I'm a big fan of simplicity. At any rate, C&C, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Nice map. Extremely clear.
Are you using it as the DM's map to draw from or putting it on a computer for the players to see?
I ask this because the numbers are really really big and bold. Makes for an interesting style but it would draw a great deal of attention to the numbering of the rooms. I think it would print really well but I find it a little over the top personally.

Just a DM's map, mate. Running in a little window at one corner of my laptop, hence the oversized numbering.
When we play I just draw things as they appear in blue felt tip pen on the battlemat. So, until I discovered the CG, I was the only one who ever saw them.

Oh yeah, I like this map. It's a bit of a blend between schematic and realistic. Looking very crisp and clear. I am sure lots of other people could find this map useful :)

I was going to mention the numbers but Sig beat me to that. And then I was going to say lighten the blue river but since you're the only one looking at it then I guess that's just fine. Personally, I like it a lot and can see how you could whip up something like this in fairly short order and be ready to roll.

So, put together the next level of the cave system, and here it is, to a usable state. Took Ascension's advice about lightening the water a bit, and I agree, it looks much better.
Tried not to go overboard with the setpieces - barrels, crates, torches, etc. It's hard for me to fight the urge to clutter the map almost to unreadability with tiny 5x5 pixel sticks of furniture. Also reduced the size of my numbering, trying to keep in mind that I'm posting these things for other people to look at or use, and obscuring 1/3 of the map with big white bubbles kinda defeats the purpose. :oops:
The northern end of the underground pool is supposed to be fed by a small waterfall, or spring - and though I tried a few different methods of making this apparent, I had trouble finding one that read easily, short of hand-drawing it in. Any suggestions?

Level 3 of this particular cavern system - leading to an underground river chase sequence. Should be good fun.
It occurs to me that this thread would be better placed in Dungeons/Subterranean. If a mod concurs, I'd be happy to have it shifted. I tend to overlook important details, like the correct place to start a new thread, at four in the AM. This is something I will endeavor to remedy in the future.

I like that one. It's a pity your players never get to see it (or do you show it to them when all is over?)
Easy to follow, very clear.
I like the design elements too, I see you're bringing in the water style from your whale map - I still love it. (I've started using the effect in my own rivers too, to great effect, thanks again for sharing that one)

I usually show them the map when all is said and done, though I've been trying to find an economical way to start printing for gamenight. Pretty tough to do with 30x30 color prints being somewhere in the neighborhood of forty bucks at the local printshop.
I really enjoy doing the water that way, I think it conveys a sub-surface current pretty well. I've been tweaking it for a little while, which I suppose is evident from levels 1-3 of this particular map set, with Whalebelly somewhere in between. Glad you're finding some use for it!

Too bad about printing prices being what they are.. Doing a world map or something would be one thing but yeah, printing out for a single session like this would be cost prohibitive. Black and white taped together for the table? I remember having a boxed set of Judge Dredd map tiles way back when, I adopted them for my wh40k city battles, ran out quickly for the size of battles I would host. The photocopied sheets ended up being a hit, they were a lot more grungy than the originals, and fit the feeling well. Plus you could cut up the map and just lay out the elements the players have run into as they get to them..

I needed something for this sunday night to introduce a new party member and get things rolling in the capital, since they've never been there before and I want things to be exciting.
6th level. 4th edition. I'm thinking a vampire lord with a cult of lizardmen and the occassional humanoid thrall other.
If I have time before I leave work, in seven and a half hours, I'm going to try to convert it legibly to gray scale and split it up into mini section that fit on standard printer paper (if you don't mind). If I am successful, I'll post the new maps here.
Edit: Quick question. As intended, how are the water ways connected, if at all? The way I am reading these if each of the three maps are on different vertical planes with map one being on the ground floor and 2 being below it, and three under 2. I recognize from the placement of the stairs that they're not right over each other. But does the river suddenly dip between 1 and 2 an they're the same? Are the spiral staircases really long and these levels are pretty far from each other?

As I much as I wanted it to, this did not work out for me in time. I still intend to use this on Sunday, just will have to draw it out on the erasable map like always.
I couldn't get the contrast rite when I converted to grayscale. It became very difficult to see the the grid. As each of the three maps would be 20 pages each at size, I didn't have the heart to print in color.
However I did find a handy site that takes images you have and makes them into large pdfs so you can print on multiple pages. http://www.blockposters.com
I am now convinced that if I made a large dungeon map, with this as my intention, I could easily make the scheme more clear for B&W Printing. In fact I think I could have converted this with more time.

Of course I wouldn't mind! I post these things with the hopes that someone can put them to some use.
Sorry the conversion/printing didn't work out for you, I would've liked to have seen your end results. Still, hope you get some good use out of the maps.
You're looking at the maps right, from what you say. Three descending levels, the water from 1 - 2 intended to be connected by a small waterfall at the northern end of the short 2nd level stream. The 3rd level river being fed by the second level stream and maybe a few others to account for the volume and current.

I bring mixed news!
My child was sick on Sunday (She's fine now) so I didn't go to DnD. Which means I have time to convert the map.
Here's the black and white version. The jpg is the overhead. The pdf is a page by page print out.
Only level one's done for now. It's not nearly as pretty as the original and I heavily recommend anyone who uses it, to keep the color version for yourself.

And now level 2. I think this level came out better.
Please note, as this image will be seen by players, the following is intentionally missing: Numbers, secret doors, and traps.
That being said, it's pretty obvious where the secret doors are. I recommend liberal use of cover paper.

Great looking maps. you can definitely see the progression, cauz that last map looks really great!!!
I really like the way you did the water on the last one. The first level was a bit dark for me, but its about perfect by level 3.

Here's the fourth and final map for this particular run, connected to the 3rd level by that underground river chase sequence bit that I mentioned. That part's unmapped, mostly a series of skill rolls and such to navigate safely around jutting stalagmites and rocky outcroppings, and over small waterfalls without capsizing.
Then they'll be dumped out here, in an lake deep underground, which happens to be the lair of the aboleth running the show, complete with creepy non-Euclidean shrine.
Pretty happy with the waterfall, less so with this version of that water effect I've been playing with. Should be a fun game night, and a good culmination for this adventure.
Now on to something different, I'm sure my PCs are completely sick of goblins, water, and watery goblin aboleth thralls.

The waterfall is very well done. As I said earlier, I love your water and the waterfall fits in perfectly. I think it's a masterpiece, really. That monster underwater looks very cool as well.

Kinda makes me want to go back and rework the first two levels, adding in the little waterfall on level 2 and redoing the water on both... but, need to move forward. Tuesday game night is fast approaching.

I ran with the black and white print outs last night. It went pretty smoothly except I think I need a bigger table. There was lots of taking away and bringing back as the party moved around and even split up at one point. We got just past the pit on level 2 before we stopped. I'm not sold that this is a good idea for regular use, but it did add a bit of fun.
If anyone out there uses the print out maps. . . NUMBER THE BACKS. That is all/
