Just saw this post on ConceptArt:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=167227

It got a bit savaged by the first couple of posters for what is really a very competent map. Definitely worth checking out.

Yeah, them mappers need to come here for polite criticisms :D

I liked it. Get the guy to start posting here so he can get some helpful criticisms other than "it doesn't talk to us" and "boring"
(and then I can give it some rep! lol)
:)

I really liked it too. Man they're a hard bunch at Concept art.

I agree, I thought it was quite good.

Maybe they poo-poo'd it so much because it wasn't 'artsy' enough?

Looks like Gamerprinter intervened ;)

Well, I couldn't just let them beat him up, could I?

He even suggested it was one of his first pro maps, I'd hate to see him change because of negative comments from a couple posters. He needed someone on his side - and if he's willing, he's got the whole CG on his side!

Gawd! now we are becoming a mapping support group...

[me] "Hi. My name is RobA and I'm a mapper."

Well, in all honesty when I posted my first map here, if I would have had a reception like that, I likely never would have posted again. And it probably would have been my last map. The original intent was to make a one-off wallpaper, and then move on with my life. It's the friendly atmosphere and the genuine willingness to help others improve that's kept me going and turned me into a mapping machine :)

Perhaps they have a different approach on that forum, but I'm glad I found this place first.

Amen. my friend amen. Having a friendly and helpful atmosphere here is something we try very hard to cultivate. Good thing is that it's self perpetuating!

They created a monster! ;)
Just kidding, you are absolutely right. This is one of the rare friendly islands out there in Internet Ocean.

We're pretty carebear. I didn't even know people like y'all survived on the internet. Even parenting forums are meaner.

I have done my fair share of trolling. Having been a power gamer I can safely say it kinda comes with the territory :P
Carebear is more constructive, though :)

Oh, as for trolling, I recently found this gem of a game:

I've been warned on a few and fed the trolls.

That's why we don't ever discuss politics or religion here. Good thing too.

Apparently, Conceptart likes old concepts...much too conservative and quite contradictory to the idea of "concept" being to push the envelop. Artistic creativity and execution like that needs to be fostered and developed instead of having a few people say "give us the old stuff". Granted that the hand-drawn style is very difficult to get good results with but his looks hand painted. My guess, though, is that the other people are just sitting in the background (like usual) and not offering up much but just saving it to their hard drives in order to emulate it sometime in the future. Maps like that would get a Feature here all of the time - and already do - because of the quality of the vision and execution. I wonder if GP's lil butt-spanking will send some of those guys over here to "meh" our stuff. I guess we're gonna find out :) But at least we'll welcome them, like we do everyone, and continue on our merry way doing what we do because it's fun and we want to get better. And besides, the comments came from level 1 gladiators...is that like newb?

And the one time we discussed religion, specifically the new edition of Dungeons and Dragons, it almost went wrong ;)

Cool down mate.
It's a board about general illustration.
While you will definitely get good advice there it's surely not as specialized as anything you would get around here.

Here we tend to go into details. Over there, they don't look at elevations, they just look at the end result.

Just my opinion.

Yep, it's not concept art specific any more - and I think they're going to have a namechange some time soon to reflect that. Definitely one of the largest and most respected art sites out there with people with serious clout posting there. Its size does mean that the quality of comments is very variable though as no-one can read all the posts so it's a bit of a crapshoot as to who posts on any given piece.

There's some real douchebags there, to be honest. I used to post there and got sick of getting nothing but grief no matter what I posted. There's just no pleasing some people, I guess. :D
