Hi fellow-mappers, I just entered the guild and thought lets have a go at the challenge... Hope you like the map. I plan to use the map in my campaign so there's a story behind it...

"A Wildfire has emerged and destroyed the northern part of the once beautiful continent of Anthica. This wildfire was released by the ancient Demon Xior Thonta while he was trying to escape his prison. The demon was captured cycles ago in the bowels of the earth by the Elders, while he was trying to acquire control over the World's Seed. Enraged, he melted the core of the planet and tries to escape ever since. Every now and then he manages to crack the walls of his prison and lets out the Wildfire to avenge his imprisonment. With the help of magic the people of Anthica manage to stand against the Wildfire. At least, so far...."

Man, that is really pretty!

More labels, dude. Maps are all about the labels.

Very cool, some of the labels are a bit hard to read but that's probably just me.

...and Welcome Aboard!

That looks pretty cool, but I really wanted to zoom in. Do you have a higher-res version you can post?

Wow That's quite a great map!!

Really good mapping skills there! You made a really good first draft. Did anyone else see the general outline of Africa?

Hi all, thanks for the feedback. I started labelling more and tried to enhance resolution (however i'm afraid i started off too low res so lesson is to start higher res on my next map). Labelling is painful :( trying to make them more readble whilst keeping the weathered look. They're not yet what I want but I'll keep experimenting. As for the outline it indeed looks like Africa although I generated it with a fractal tool.

Tried to enhance resolution more and re-did the details. I think this is the final one ... tho somehow it seems one can never completely finish a map...

2 things, both optional, but it's what I would do (and I often overdo things):

1. Increase the opacity on that dark outer glow around your labels, might make them more dramatic.
2. Put a dark outer glow around the border to separate it from the map a tad.

Otherwise, nice.

I tried your tips Ascension and they definitely add to the map, so thanks ;)

Looking really beautiful! Great work!

I really dig this map...very awesome colors and labelling. My only issue is that the big grid lines are going on top of the border as well as the map.

I really like the border writing...where did you derive that from?

10-12-2009, 03:36 PM
Hi Tom, I indeed forgot to pull the grid down (initially the border was sort of 'part of the map') ... so thanks for the pointer. The border was created using a font called 'alphabet of the magi'. cheers
