Hi all - I was looking for a photoshop tutorial in mapmaking and got onto this site due to Ravells (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=5240) excellent guide.

My attempts at maps before the tutorial were like this:

So that's a big improvement ;)

I've also been using wilbur for the shadows and rivers - takes a little getting used to, but amazing once it starts working.

I've seen a few cool tutorials for "ye olde mappe" styles, so that might be the next project...

Glad you found the tutorial helpful. That's a great improvement. Really nice 3d effect you have going with the new map.

A lot of the 'prettiness' comes from the last 3 layers, where I add a golden glow, up the contrast, and use a bumpmap from wilbur. Without all that, it's a lot more flat:
