View Full Version : August Entry: Modern Rose
This is intended for modern maps. It is based on a compass I drew in a dungeonforge forum thread a while back.
This one is completely from scratch, however, and completely in Inkscape, including all shading, blurs, effects, and so on. I have exported it as as png, so the transparency has been maintained. I'd love to see someone drop it on a map (hint :) It is intended to look like a metal rimmed, curved glass thingy with the marking engraved and enameled on it.
I could also remove the hightlights and shadows so it could be rotated differently... I'll post the svg if there is interest.
*EDIT* I added an in use example on a map I found on my hard drive...Not the right style, but shows off the lighting effects a bit more...

There are certainly too few Modern Compass Roses available!
This has a very professional look.
Nice job!
Just an update, with my permission, this compass is now being used in a blackberry GPS application (without the highlight and drop shadow):

Just keeps getting weirder!
Today I got this email:
Hi RobA.
My name is XXXXXXXXXXXX and I'm a single iPhone developer from Sweden.
I'm a big fan of your PD Modern Compass Rose. So much in fact that I've made a small iPhone compass app using it.
Today Apple called me and asked if they can use my app in a commercial, so I thought that you might be interested in making your name visible in some way. It's not 100% sure yet it will happen.
I'm not receiving any money for this, just free publicity for my app. I have no idea what the commercial will look like, just that my app will be visible in it.
Even though it's a public domain image, I want you to benefit from this as a designer.
...
Looking forward to hear from you!
Huh!

Dude!! Is this site just the best or what! That rocks how such a simple thing as a mapping challenge can turn into a globally recognized object. Congrats!

There's my compass! (without the blur as the iPhone svg engine doesn't support blur effect)
