After an epic journey of almost 4 months, it's done! Anyone wondering why i haven't been so active around here over the last bit, this is one of the reasons why.

Anyone who's followed some of the previous collaborations between myself and AslanC will understand how things can go back and forth forever at times :P But this is it, finalized version. It's unlabelled at this point, that's AslanC's job :)

Some elements have carried over from the original New Dawn of the West map, but everything's been updated texturewise this time. i got to address a number of issues that were bothering me before, so I'm extremely happy with this edition.

Note that the version I'm uploading here is about halfsize. the original is almost 8kx5k and over 10 megs. I have it posted at my Deviant Art gallery (http://coyotemax.deviantart.com/art/The-World-of-Aeran-145517684) if you want to see it in it's true glory :) Oh, and I broke my previous record.. the PSD file for this is almost 1.5 gigs.

this map, unlike my previous ones, is Copyright 2009 Tin Hill Press

What's with that funky multi-coloured island in the middle? It seems to have red trees but there is no beach on it, the texture goes right up to the sea and just stops. Looks a little plonked on.

I can see why this took you a lot of time, there is visibly a lot of work gone into it.
I am curious though, with this being copyright of Tin Hill Press, does this mean it is a paid commission? Just wondering as your words suggest there are a lot of man hours involved and I can't imagine your hourly rate worked out very high. :D

Gah, the blood forest is my bane ;) First it took agest to get the colour right, then the beaches didn't work with it, and then i was in the middle of about 12 other things and it somehow got rushed past. Consider it fixed for the large version, but I'm going to leave this one the way it is.

As to being a paid commission, no not directly. It was a stepping stone into some other endeavours though, and we'll see where that takes off to. Really, it was a lot of fun to do, and I learned a lot as I went, so I got my money's worth out of it, you might say.

woot!

As I have said privately and now will say publicly.

A work of art sir.

Tell them how long it took you ;)

D'oh i forgot to mention this is based on Historyhead's Animus Prime map, used with permission :)

Very, very nice... and certainly a mega undertaking.
Are we going to see a labeled version some time in the future?

I know AslanC has already started on the labeling, so we should see something at some point. When we do, should I upload over the original, or attach it to a later post? thinking about it now, I suppose I should have held off until until the labels were added.

You can upload it over the original or even next to it...

Well, I must say I am very impressed. Way beyond anything I could do with the original map texture and colour wise. I will stick to my own version in black and white. Absolutely fantastic - I never imagined it would look so good.

I'm glad you approve :) It was a great shape for the coastlines and a real pleasure to work with!

I concurr!

Historyhead it was like you reached into my imagination and pulled out what I couldn't visualize. As I told you in PM, when I saw that map I KNEW I was looking at Aeran!

As for the labeling, I am about 70% done, should be finished by Monday.

Actually if one of the CL's wants to move this thread to the WIP area, I would not object.

Looking back, that would seem more appropriate :) Sorry, will think things like this through better in the future. I was just all excited since my part of the project was done :)

That mosaic compass rose screams awesomeness. Very cool.

The whole map is great, even without labels.

It's moved.

Cereth: Thanks, heh. Seems like everyone loves that compass, I'm guessing because it's so different. In all honesty, I had actually tacked it on as an afterthought :)

Sometimes spur of the moment ideas can be the best ones!

jfrazierjr: thank you kindly!

I uploaded a version of the map with partial labeling done (http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Ecoyotemax/)to one of my webspaces.

I used the zoomify export from photoshop, so it should be rather easy to peruse instead of waiting for the whole 10 megs or so :)

Do you mean Export - ZoomView? I gotta learn how to do web pages so I can do something like that.

Hahah, my maps end up getting so unwielding and big that I have to break them down into ten different layer sets WIP maps just so my poor little laptop doesn't burst into flames!

Ascension: you don't need any html knowledge at all. The export takes care of it, it's simply a flash file with hundreds of images in subdirectories. If you can upload to a webhost, you're done, you just have to hand out the link. It really is that easy.

You could get fancy and embed it into existing sites if you wanted, but it's really not necessary (I may take advantage of my own web coding skills to implement one of these into the CMS i'm setting up for the one project i'm involved in though).

TheImperial: Yes, I know how that is. My regular machine couldn't deal with it, i had to borrow the wife's machine (I splurged and got her a good one so she'd stop whinging about not being able to play the games she wants). Even that one was chugging a few times :)

Incidentally I did discover there's a maximum PSD filesize of 2 gigs, yow. PSB (large file format) apparently can go to either 8 gigs or unlimited.. and 300000x300000pixels! scary stuff.. I want the machine they tested that with!
