Well I finally finished this one! The WIP thread for this is at Torentine Empire: my li'l corner of a fictional world (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=8142) but basically, the entire map is built in Adobe Illustrator (CS3) and then pasted into Photoshop in groupings of layers where i apply various filters and layer some subtle effects in to make it look more polished. I especially like the easy mask-ability of Photoshop. I made good use of graphic styles in illustrator to get train tracks etc and i use some free fonts for some of the little icons. All of the coats of arms are built in illustrator as well. The globe is taken from the original fractal file of the planet and then shaded.

This is the first in a project of about 4 (maybe more) atlas style maps which will focus on this fictional place. The next will either be a land use, resource, topography and relief map (all wrapped into one if i can manage it) or a large city map of the imperial capital surrounded by some smaller city insets.

Something is up with the site tonight and i can't seem to view the map i uploaded (had troubles). You can see it at the following link until i can get it uploaded properly:

Wow, this is amazing. It has everything you would expect from a real-world professional map, only it's a fantasy world. Superb job.

The legend is awesome. And the globe thing in the upper left corner is intriguing.

Heiliger Bimbam, as germans say. This is incredibly well done. Illustrator maps are seldom here and this one makes me want to learn it better.

Thanks! I like to layout/keep the master map in illustrator because of it's precision and the flexibility of points and curves as opposed to pixels makes it easy to change. I would find it difficult to actually output the map from illustrator with results this polished although it can most likely be done.

Masking in photoshop is a breeze compared to illustrator in my opinion and makes it easier to get a nice finished product.

Absolutely stunning. Handsomerob would be proud! (He uses similar techniques or at least makes similar looking maps). The legend makes it for me.

Have some Rep!!

His (handsomerob's) tutorial made this possible for me. I cited that in the WIP thread but not in this one. It gave me a better sense of those atlas-like proportions for type etc.

Hi a2area,

I like the map extremely much and it look very pro.. I have a small request, but first the background for the request.. I am in my spare time helping in a youth club in the "ghetto" were i live, and for the youngster we started a project where they are telling stories based upon screenshots from their favourite game, now they asked if they couldn't make a story project where they combine their stories into one.. But they needed a fictional world as base for it, so i have seen your map i find it perfect for them to use for their stories...

* Is it okay, if i use this map for a non-commercial, non-profit charity project..?
* If its okay, do you have some more info about the Torrentine Empire i can use inspiration and background information..?
* Finally do you have some bigger pictures of the national symbols..?
* Any other information or help would also be appreciated..?

Thanks in advance and is looking forward to your answer...
Regards,
Morten.

Hi Bedouin.. that would not be a problem with me. As I understand it, the creative work that i've done on that nation is my property, however the world that it is a part of has some copyrights so I will check on the specifics and get back to you here. Probably if you were to use it not in connection with that specific world it would not be a problem. Perhaps make up some names for the world and neigboring nations.. i could even change them on the map if you'd like.
I have all of those symbols in larger format as well.

Hi Brian,

Sounds perfect, and if it isn't too much a bother then please change whatever you need to change so i can use this fantastic map, and if you can mail me the symbols in larger formats it would be perfect.. And thanks a lot and please tell me if anything i can do to assist, even though i dont have any idea for what it should be :-)

Now just to find out how to print it in poster size, but thats my problem...!

Regards,
Mo'

Many print shops can print poster size... the resolution is fairly high but for poster it could even be larger for really good quality. I think the largest you could get away with is about 18 inches wide and 24" high on this version. I got the go-ahead from the "planet master" and even some encouragement for the subject of its use.. which i think is great as well. The map is fine as is, just make up your own name for the planet. If you make one more post then can PM or email you my full name in case you need to credit the map to me later (verbally i mean). That way I can also let you know when the city maps are finished as well as get you some other background information.

Would you like the symbols laid out as is on the map just blown up?

Thanks is sounds great and send my regards and thanks to the "planet master"... And the symbols if it just can get them blown up so i can use them as inviduel frontpages of the diffent regions of the map... Sorry my english isn't great..!

Yeah i will check some of the local print shops... And again thanks this will be great. And i will of course credit you everything there is related to your work, so plz send me your full name...

i saw in a different thread the other variations of the map, the night sat and so on, i am too greedy to ask permission for thoose also or :-)

How did you create the texture in your political map? Did you use Fractal Terrains?
Awesome map, by the way...

This is exactly the sort of map I want to create. It's magnificent. So much detail and so clear.
All the little details like the coat of arms etc. are beautiful too.
If only I had the skills to do anything like this.
