(aka anything you can do, I can do better ;) )

Reading this thread on making a map scale bar with photoshop (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?9078-Using-photoshop-to-set-a-scale-marker) reminded me of a script I saw before for gimp...

A few seconds of google-fu and:

Plugin para Gimp para hacer escalas de mapas (Gimp Map Scale Legend Plugin) (http://latinsud.blogspot.com/2009/06/plugin-para-gimp-para-hacer-escalas-de.html)

and the provided samples:

While the page and screen shots are in Spanish, the script provided is in English.

I snagged this myself some time back. It took me a few practice runs to figure out the configuration but it's pretty slick. Now if I could just start generating more maps I might be able to use it.

I'm glad there's a gimp method for this! Mine's just an explanation of an existing function anyhow :) Might be worth my time to go through and see if I can translate it to photoshop for pre-CS photoshop users..
