View Full Version : [WIP] Kalkas Bentum, Capital of the Bentis Empire

Highly inspired by a2area's awesome hand-drawn Schwari city map (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?8853-SCHWARI-Maloumba), I present to you another in a long line of WIP projects that I will probably never get finished:

Kalkas Bentum, jewel of the Bentis Empire.

The city map is a version of a city from my previous map, Dreodae (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?9089-Dreodae). I have changed the contours of the land, to simplify things a bit, and I changed the name of the city to reflect this. Like I said, the map is inspired by the incredible Schwari map, but this is done exclusively in PhotoShop, because, well, I'm way too lazy to sketch that many streets and buildings by hand.

The roads are done with simple straight lines and a few curving paths and the buildings are done using this great tutorial (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?8897-Quick-and-Dirty-Buildings-for-a-Town-Map-in-PS), with a few tweaks.

The map is far from done, as I need to add and redo a bunch more roads and buildings, put in some labeling and other stuff. I'm thinking of coloring each district to give the map a bit of character, but then again, I might not.

Here's to finally getting this one done. Now speak!

That is really cool, just wish it were a little bigger :)

You mean the scale or just the city?

I think he's talkin about image size...he and I are pretty detail oriented people so we like to see every little nook n cranny up close and personal :)

Hmm, I could make it bigger, but I don't know how I would scale it up, short of completely redoing all the roads. Since it's raster, the lines would become too blurry. Unless you have some technique that I don't know about.

Buildings done, wall erected.

Looks pretty darn good I think. It looks like a pretty realistic, huge city. So how much time did it cost you to get this far?

Just the resolution/size of the image.

Too much. That is all.

@Steel General

I think it might be too late to do something about that. Scaling up in raster is a no-go and I'm not fittin' to redo all the roads.

* Increased image size, not scale, to make a bit more room.
* Changed coastline a bit.
* Added farms.
* Made wall stand out.

To do:
* Look into the possibility of scaling things up a bit.
* Add more farms, but might need a bit tweaking to make them look like actual farms.
* Might add forest and mountain from original map.
* Labeling, to add some lore stuff.
* Other things I can't think of now.

The size/resolution is much better now, this is pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing the finished version.

I agree, it looks much better (but then I love to be able to see each individual building). I like the palette and style and the whole layout, and I think the map certainly captures the scale of the city which I assume is supposed to be pretty huge as it is an imperial capital.

That's a huge city map! Congratulations on your progress so far - this is looking great.

Had some time to spare, so here's the latest update.

Bah, I'm not gonna write a to-do, cause I'm not gonna follow it anyway.

Impressive work!
