Hello,

I am in need of a DEM for all of South America (free). I have tried googling this, but with no luck. The DEM does not need to be high resolution. 1km would do. Any web sites out there that I can download free DEMs?

Thanks.

Try searching for SRTM. The basic data is free but finding a usable DEM for the particular area you want without any holes or errors can sometimes be a pain.

It's not DEMs, but http://www.naturalearthdata.com/ has nice information. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/global/global.html is a good source for DEMs. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg/topo/gltiles.html also works well.

Here is a GREAT tut on working with DEMs hosted right here! (http://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?5337-Managing-SRTM-information-with-GDAL&highlight=srtm)

It even shows you how to get the info you want out of the whole thing. Meaning the location that you want. Well worth the read ;)
