God knows I don't have the time, but what the hey, I'll throw my hat in the ring. I want to try one of those maps which are flat but which have 3d buildings on.

Here are the little models I've made so far.

Looks like a fine start to me...

Hey, it's Tronzumi! I like it already Ravells :)

Good start Ravs. I am struggling to get time on mine too...

Cheers guys, I'm now trying to figure out a fast workflow...I don't really want to have to assign UVs and paint each of the models, but I may have to...some rough work.

Some interesting uphill water there :)

Looking good, great 3D models on those buildings.

lol, I know...waterflow is the bane of 3d modelling. I had the same problem with the last 3d map I did, but this time I have a cunning plan!

More sketching to get the distribution

Next step. I call this style 'the dog's breakfast'.

Wow that's an awesome view :!: Looking forward to seeing this with those 3d buildings added!

Some pointers that don't detract from your map but are inconsistent with the actual town...
- the highest peak, the one referenced in the background info, is about 700m high, 600m higher than the town
- the bigger river flows west to east into the sea

I think the rendered mountains are very striking. You're definitely on to something.

Thanks Guys, I'mm, I'm not going to go for something that's an exact copy of the real thing...artistic licence and all that (otherwise known as laziness!)

Here's a test render of the town with some of the models in.

I think it will turn out great Ravells, if you have the courage to finish it, that is :D

Shaping up beautifully.

03-14-2010, 12:40 AM
Wow. That's looking awesome.

Cheers guys. Doesn't have any of the artistry of some of the other entries. I'll get the models down and then look at how to texture them properly (I think simple flat colours)...and work out how much detail to put in so it doesn't look too cluttered (trees? fences? hedges? jetties?). Also more textures for the ground plane...little vegetable patches etc.

It's a shame it's a winter view, I think the landscape looks much nicer without the snow.

great stuff so far Ravells!

03-14-2010, 06:37 PM
Thanks DJj!

Slightly more 'arty?' I think it looks too filtered....anyway...that was a diversion....just to see what it might look like. I think I'll keep it as a dusk / night scene though with a dominant blue colour.

03-15-2010, 04:50 AM
Maybe you could make multiple renders, use one big image as the primary scene and add a few smaller pictures to the side with different lighting/perspective/zoom?

03-15-2010, 08:04 AM
That's a brilliant Idea, Ghostman!! I think I'll do that! Thanks!

Argh I've run out of time...it's all looking a bit spartan.

Here's the final entry.

I like the atmosphere that you're adding there. I saved a copy for my Inspiration folder so that I can try something like this someday. Neat stuff.
