Looks like a good start...
Hi,
I'm trying to get better at painting in PS, and the current project is making a decent looking middle eastern street, with houses and a bazaar.
this is the first house + a rough sketch of the ones next to it.
the biggest problem IMO is that the painting gets too "cartoony" - i'm trying to stop making dark thin lines to separate walls, but it just doesn't seem right.
any advice would be most welcome

I like it. So far so good.
If the radiance of a thousand suns was to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One...I am become Death, the Shatterer of worlds.

Looks really good IMO. I couldn't begin to offer advice as I can't draw a stick figure with a stick.![]()

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.

I like this version better.
Maybe you can add small (pixel?) dark blue dots along the top edge of the light blue to simulate a tile mosaic? It does remind me of pictures of Morocco.

yeah, i was kind of aiming for a Morrocan (or maybe Yemeni) style. I think the tiles won't look good there since this looks like a rather poor house, the one next to it would look more fancy :-].
also, I want to do the interior of the house, but can't think of cool stuff to put there (lack of imagination due to too much time studying for tests) - shoudl this be:
1. an alchemists home & lab?
2. an old cartographers home?
3. some other cool thing?
p.s.
I can't seem to be able to get the colors right - wither it's too dark (B&W luminosity only layer + color layer) or it's too bright & cartoony (single layer pigment + shadows), is there a better way of coloring?
As for actual cartography help I am the wrong person to ask
For the contents, I think that a simple low table and pillows or short/camp stools just inside the door with some nice rugs scattered about makes a nice simple generic interior for the first floor.
Then again I like my maps where I can use them several times for different locations by adding a few extra furnishings.

I thought about making different setups in different layers of the photoshop file (like "if you roll 1-3 - it's a normal house, 4-6 it's a satanic cult hiding place"). it'd be a great way to learn working with layers.
btw - what's camp stools?
Camp stools are small low to the ground folding stools.
With lower ranking people on pillows sitting on this puts you towering over others.
