not as obvious as most challenge suggestions, but bear with me...

I have 2 different ideas for this, either 1) as long-term challenge that goes on for maybe 4-6 months, with each challenge building on the last. for instance, the first month can be create a world, the second month can be zoom in on a continent, the third can be detail a region in the previous continent and the 4th can be anything as long as its based in one of the previous entries.

the second idea can be to pick a previous entry (you need to have entered before) and either evolve the map or do a later version in a different style. you can take into account things like increased/decreased water levels, changed borders, some great magical calamity etc.

(I couldn't add a poll in the original thread, so if the mod's could delete the other without a poll that would be great :D)

What's up guys. This is my first suggestion, so be kind :) ahha
Well one of the things I most like is the power of Randomization. Based on that, my suggestion for a next challenge is to go to this site Random Noun Generator and generate, let's say 5, or 10 words, chose let's say, 3 or 5 nouns, and create a map that got all of these words as a central element.
Example:
1 Anethesiologist
2 Cellar
3 Craftsman
4 Diving
5 Drill
6 Honey
7 Romania
8 Wednesday

So lot's o random elements here, let's say I wanna do a Battle Map in a Cellar (2), with Romanian archtecture and elements (7), where a Craftsman (3) has to fight some enemies using a Drill (5).
Silly right? But hey, that's the fun in randomness! No all the elements have to be in the map, maybe a name could come up and the title might be "Ronald's Worst Wednesday"?
it can be Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives or even the mix of them!
So here are the sites I found that we could use:
Adjective Generator - Randomly Generate Hundreds of Adjectives (ADJECTIVES)
Random Noun Generator (NOUNS)
Verb Generator - Randomly Generate Verbs (VERBS)

ps: I know some time ago we had a challenge using the words, Rock, Wind and 8 (I don't know the words for sure). It was fun, since it gave a common ground, but with was very limited in some ways, here the participant could randomize as long as he wanted until he found the perfect (for him) combination of words!

So what do you say guys? :D

I've been looking at a lot of the maps around, and I see lots of awesome maps, but the variety of terrain features has been a little dry. I was wondering if there could be a challenge to create maps with unusual "real world" features.

For instance: Oxbow Lakes are an interesting feature of real-world rivers that I see very few of in fantasy maps in general. Glacial Valleys, Fjords, and other water features are all interesting and seem to be somewhat neglected.

I was thinking if maybe one of the challenges could be to make a fan map, I mean, a map based on a universe built by another artist. It could anything from a USS Enterprise map to a King's Landing Map.

I'm not sure about it, but I think there is no problem with licenses and rights, otherwise a lot of people over the internet would be suited :P. As long as none here uses it for commercial purposes I think it will be ok.

Hey there,

So I'm not sure how I got there but last night I was considering challenge ideas and I was stuck with the idea of collaborating and guidance. So I had two ideas (or rather, one idea that morphed into another connected one) that I thought I'd share.

The first is a straight up collaboration though in order to prevent one person doing most of the work screenies would need to be posted at every changeover.
So, somehow two partners are chosen/assigned. One person starts and maybe does the landmass shape or something. Then it is handed over in a single flat image to the other person and that is developed, maybe up to an agreed upon position. Then it is handed back again with a screeny posted to show progress. This continues till the map is done. Both artists are credited with the win if their map is voted for.
I can see various problems here, in that it needs an even number of entrants and both artists would need to be reasonably dedicated to hitting their own deadlines for each changeover etc. I think it could be pretty cool though.

The second idea is stranger though in that the collaboration takes the form of art direction. Each person is assigned a director (as long as there are two entrants it works - no need for an even number of entrants on this one) and that person dictates everything that happens on your map. They tell you what style of map they want. They tell you what they want on it. They tell you to change this part as it isn't good enough. They tell you to change that colour... etc... basically what you would expect to get from a client. The winner of the gold compass could possibly be the director and not the artist...

Anyway, a couple of ideas to think on.

Subject line pretty much sums it up - Idea is to have a challenge where everyone is asked to create a symbol that can be plugged into maps (i.e. Statue, Furniture, Weapon racks, Tools, etc.) Obviously this doesn't fit the template of a "Mapping Challenge", but wondering if there is any interest in having a different kind of challenge each month for this kind of thing. (Hoping i'm not stepping on the toes of the moderators here) :)

I'm pretty sure they used to do something like this on Dunjinni all the time...but since it seems to be largely defunct, perhaps we could do it here.

I know many folks on here are against "stamping" because most people don't use their own art to "stamp"...so here's an opportunity for people to create their own. It also gives some of us an incentive to learn how to create our own (thinking of myself here) and get feedback from the community. Finally it provides a fresh pool of objects for others to use in their maps (instead of relying on Bogie's generosity) :)

Thoughts?

Not sure if it's been suggested or done before but I think a challenge that specifically takes the cartographer out of their comfort zone would be cool. I guess this would only work for people who have actually posted a map before (otherwise who is to know if a person is out of their comfort zone or not?) but what I am thinking is specifically doing a map in a style that is known to be either a weakness for the artist or one they haven't tried before. So basically, as I prefer to do a hand-drawn style then I myself would have to take on something like a an atlas style map or one created from extensive texture usage - something I would never normally have a go at.

I guess there are problems that need to be sorted with the idea but I believe it would be a really cool way to entice people to give something else a shot.

(I have no idea how to make a poll, btw, so forget that. :) )

So I was thinking about a challenge where people would make maps based on a image/picture of something. I don't mean the idea already used on a challenge, where it was posted a image and you had to use it on your map somehow, no.

I mean, for example, a image of a War (lets say soldiers fighting on the WW II), the map would have to be based on the image, and what it represents, but you wouldn't have to use it on your map (unless you wanted to). Basically (keeping the example I used of the soldiers) you would be able to map the area of the war, or a Battlemap with soldiers and tanks, or even a map with the troops movements. The idea of how is up to you, but it must have a connection with the image somehow.

Thats my idea, I think it would be cool cuz it does give you a "mapping line" to follow, but it is also a wide line, so that it has lots of ways to make the map.
