This was an experiment to try a few new techniques and refine some old ones. As usual it's done in Inkscape, and I used a Ruby script to generate the names based on a set of weighted random rules. The hachuring and forest effects are Path Effects (Mixing Pattern Along Path and Sketch) while the textures are SVG Filter Effects including my old standby parchment effect, a new version of my ink effect, and a watercolour effect that really incorporates two distinct filters with a clipping path in between.

I think this is your best map yet man; really nice job on this man!

Agreed! I especially love the pencil-hatching details on the compass rose and such.
Thanks.
I was actually a bit worried that the pattern on the compass, scale bars, and border might look a bit too obviously a pattern (It's just the stock 2:1 stripes pattern)
Very cool!

It's very pretty. I'd never have assumed it was inkscape looking at this. I love the subtle lines on the forest borders. Beautiful.
