A friend asked me to post a map here, so here ya go. This was done for a friends campaign (Ilim).
As for the creation it is more about technique rather than raw talent. This was 100% done in paint.net, a free art program (tutorial image attached).
1 - Sketch scanned, made 2 color. I pixilated the drawing to remove any smoothing.
2 - Apply semi-transparent layer of the parchment, full map.
3 - The basic parchment background I used
4 - Apply another semi-transparent layer of the parchment, darker, for water
5 - What I used for forests
6 - Apply semi-transparent layer of forest for greenery. Erasing the unneeded bits. Manually paint in the small areas with green.
7 - Last semi-transparent layer, clean up colors - buildings, coasts, plains, badlands, and so forth. Flattened the image and applied the labels - Dead Map Treasure Hand font. Stick a fork in it, done.
Nice map. I would suggest a tiny bit more highlights and lowlights on the mountains, but thats just me and it's a great piece either way.
Pretty nice, I especially like the cities.
Pretty cool, reminds me a bit of the earlier Ultima Online maps.
I like this style.
@Steel General, i almost repped you for mentioning Ultima Online. I played for 7 years :)
Great style, and thanks for the walk through of the process. Some interesting ideas there.
Really nice map. I'll second that thanks for the walkthrough. It's always great to see how others put their maps together.
Hi Skisko, and welcome to the guild. Thank you so much for posting your map, and even more for letting us see your workings. Have some rep and looking forward to seeing more of your work. Your style has a great consistent unified feel to it. Great mountains!
