I mostly put mine up as a badge too, and to perhaps discuss a few 4e specific questions, like what people would iike in a battlemap to make it good for 4e. But, unless I'm mistaken, the group threads/activity doesn't show up on "what's new" and therefor one tends to forget checking it.

This is true...and group affiliation only shows up on profile so it's hard for new people to even notice it. Maybe one start would be to put group thumbnails into the poster's sidebar under awards or something? That might spark greater interest in groups. Then, with some members, we could maybe figure out a use for them...lol. Just a thought.
Of course, if you spark interest and allow them to show up in the sidebar you might have to implement some controls over what groups can be created: I could make the "mearrin69 is the best!" group and have that as a badge. Nobody would join that group, not even me. It could lead to some "spammy" abuses of the groups system...not that I think any of regular users would do any such thing.

NB I'm off to create my self-worship group now...
