I (usually) use the feet and miles simply because I understand it and it's pretty universal. I tend to not "invent" a measure as then I would have to explain it and make it more difficult for the user or viewer of the map to understand.

When making a map scale icon for your map do you use the imperial ft, the scientifically invented meter or some other fictitious distance?

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
