As someone who used to HATE the pen tool and now uses it a lot, I agree with Lukc. It's painful at first, but worth climbing that steep learning curve.

I need to add River names on map but cant make text follow river...
I dont know how to change direction of text. Any suggestions?

If you put some text in with the text tool, you can then change to the pointer tool (top on the toolbar) and then hover near the corner of the text box for rotate handles. Then drag it to whichever direction you like
