Inspired by RobA's GIMP tutorials, I decided to try GIMP again.
Never completely satisfied with the results I was getting following the tutorials, I took a few liberties to get the attached image.
I have yet to try adding forests, rivers, towns, or labels.
This map was started with no design goal or purpose other then to try making a map with GIMP.

Nice! I'm guessing plasma for the mountains? (the 45 degree artifacts are usually a plasma signature)...

Actually, it started as a contour map with each layer being a semi-random coastline generated from the shape of the one below.
I made a layer mask for each layer as I made them and then replaced them all with the same bump map with the various layer masks applied so the highest elevation was effected by all the bump maps while the lowest only has one.
