That's right. I've tried using styles (only) in Photoshop to speed up the mapping.
Made 3 styles. One for the land, one for mountains, and one for wood. You can see the result below. Now I can make maps ultra fast (just paint with the pencil tool with black paint on the correct layer!) but the quality is maybe not the best... but maybe as a start? Just add some shadowing etc...
What do you think? This is just what I came up with this evening so I think the result can be loads better with some tweaking. I bet someone else has made maps this way before so some input would be nice.

Looking good. We should start building up a library of layer styles. Do a search on Soixante who did a great tutorial on layer style mountains. Unfortunately he posted it round about the same time as Pasis and it was eclipsed by Pasis mountain tutorial.
