    The limited color choices and the high contrasted reference map reminded me of all the maps I saw in history text books, so I thought I'd give it a go.

    Good start, reminds me of those too. Had a WWII book as a 12-year-old that had loads of maps along those lines and it's the first thing that sprang to mind even before reading your commentary.
