This is an excellent idea. It provides a push beyond the norm while also being immensely flexible and not excluding anyone who doesn't favour a particular style, scale, or genre.
I will be a guide through the darkness
Let them fumble their way through the depths.
I propose the following challenge: A map which spans that dangerous journey between two 'safe' points. The world is full of danger, and safe-havens from the horrors that lurk in the wilderness and deep places are few and far between. Without a map to guide them, adventures would surely stumble into danger.
This could be a trade route between two cities, a goblin infested passageway beneath a treacherous mountain, a sea-chart spanning the distance between two port towns, a quarantine zone, or a galactic star-chart through a space-bandit region.
I suggest this challenge include the starting point of the journey, the safe harbor at the end, and explicitly detail the dangers between.

Yeah, pretty cool.
If the radiance of a thousand suns was to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One...I am become Death, the Shatterer of worlds.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
