    Welcome to the Guild Oleg. There is somewhere on this site a tutorial for doing Swiss style maps with contours and shading I believe. Might be a bit advanced for you, I don't know, but that style is great for creating maps that have the WWII feel to them. Living in the Ukraine I would think that there would be no lack of insperation for maps depiction all sorts of battles.
