Welcome Aboard!
I highly suggest you check out the Tutorials (if you haven't already), find one for whatever software you're using and give it a whirl.
After many years of working with large piles of paper, I recently started a wiki for my campaign setting and have begun to move everything on-line. My attempts to "computerize" crude hand-drawn maps have been, well, less than satisfying. I know what my crude colored blobs mean, but they lack a certain style.
So, I set out to better learn how to make fantasy maps and it seems google brought me to the right place. I am not much of an artist, but I hope I can at least learn a few tricks to spruce things up.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
