Hey wow man, there's a community
Some friends and I recently talked about starting up a D&D campgaign. They've never played before, and as resident Geek, I put myself forward as DM. I used to love drawing maps when I was in high school, and I'm happy to be doing it again.
At least this time, there's an outlet for my work.
A little about myself:
I'm a graphic designer and web designer by trade, although I'm currently teaching myself 3D modelling and animation (slow going). I play Didgeridoo and Saxaphone, and I bomb around with the local Dubstep crew in detroit.

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.
