Greetings!
Hi,
I just discovered this Guild today, and after skimming through the discussions, I couldn't fail to join this marvellous community.
I've been trying to create fantasy worlds since my early teens (as, I bet, many of the people here...). My chief interests are, as a linguist, the languages, and, of course (otherwise I wouldn't be here), maps. I only recently began drawing and creating on computer, and I'm still looking for good software (for now, I'm mucking around with The Gimp, being on linux).
My dream would be to be able to create a 'google earth'-like view of a world (from scratch), from large scale to (for now) not-so-large, on a single file format. I don't know if this is possible...
Anyway, I'm glad to be among you guys, I think this will be a great experience!

Even if I am correct, I would still advise you to follow your heart. This whole Cartographers Guild thing, it seems to me, is more about passion and skill and learning new techniques than it is about definitions and rules.

If thats what your after then dont miss the "Cooperative Worldbuilding Project" forum section with a link to the wiki at the top of the posts. In there is "Project Overview" with a map of a section of the world done by loads of members. If you want a quickie demo then click here for a youtube demo of it.

If you want a zoomable interface, you might want to check out ViewingDale.....Which RR is waaaay too modest to mention (he made it) and you can find a linky in his sig.
